Mr. Sun's Hatbox Review (Unluckymonster)
Mr. Sun's Hatbox, a 2D immersive-sim made mostly by a single dev
Mr. Sun's Hatbox is a game where player takes control of operation where objective is to acquire back hatbox that was stolen in intro cutscene. In XCOM-like base of operation that takes place in Mr. Sun's shop basement, player controls units that are taken into hospital to cover injuries, which covert-mission is completed next and of course choosing next mission player tackles on next.
These mainly five minute missions vary from capturing specific enemy unit or item to completing a 'boss'-stage that introduces to new level layout that game has few to offer. Where immersive-sim part comes in is by player unit's positive and negative traits like getting panicked when enemy unit spots the player or night-vision that aid's seeing in dark environments but everything is green colored. What also adds lot of possibilities to the missions that player takes on are hat's that player and enemy units wear, as these might have lethal/ defensive capabilities like propeller hat that allows player to fly in air some distance to snake hat that automatically bites nearby units. These hats work well in the game and it's always a good feeling when you come up with a correct idea to equip certain hat for certain mission in order to make your success more likely.
On my experience the game isn't very long (I completed default difficulty on five hours), but for those that want to see real challenge will have a great day on NG+ game mode which brings to table rent payment and time limits in which boss-stages must be completed, and I can imagine this game being great game for speed-running enthusiasts.
Verdict:
If you are into 2D immersive-sims where plot isn't most important/ crucial thing to you, Mr. Sun's Hatbox is a great pick on sale.
