Mortal Kombat 1 Review (XEALEEN)
The Great Game Series has confirmed its status of greatness.
I had some concerns about the new part of Mortal Kombat, the fact is that the series is already firmly on the rails that were laid down back in the days of MK9, with some exceptions like the visual style. But I’m glad that these fears remained unfulfilled - this is a worthy part of the Mortal Kombat series and if the developers continue to support it, then this game is definitely worth its money.
So, what`s the story?
The universe of the game has been completely restarted, the developers directly show this in the story and its gameplay, hinting that we can see not a remaster, but some kind of rethinking of the series, another success, just like with the original part of Mortal Kombat in 1992.
It's nice to see how many of the characters we know and love now live completely different lives, and newcomers will be able to start playing MK1 without feeling like they started watching a popular series from the middle of the season.
And yet, this does not mean that if you are a fan of the series and have not missed a single part, then you will be served only retcons and new lore - the game very quickly recalls the events of the past, and the plot itself, right up to the very end, is built on what has become end in the last part.
We all know the fact that the plot in Mortal Kombat is composed at the same level as porn films do, but overall it is a quite exciting interactive movie for 3-5 hours with blood, fights and epic events.
It`s In Our Blood
The fights are vigorous, real talk. I didn't like the way the combat was in MK X and I'm glad that the developers found a way to improve this gaming experience in subsequent parts.
There are 23 great fighters, the roster is quite tight, there is no feeling that anyone is superfluous here, but it is sad that many iconic characters like Sonya Blade or Jax were relegated to the role of kameo fighters.
But I look forward with hope, knowing which fighters will be added to the game in the future: Omni-Man, Homelander and, if you believe some rumors, even He-Man and Doom guy, then this will be a real bomb.
Invasion Mode
The problem with the previous parts of the game was that after completing the campaign, players entertained themselves in multiplayer, Towers and hot-seat battles.
Now the game has an Invasion mode, atypical for MK, which looks like a tabletop turn-based RPG. You will need to navigate through different realms, fight opponents and complete various tasks, improve your heroes, gain rewards, and so on.
And here, despite all the developers’ promises to support the mode with content, it’s hard to believe in its success, since all of its replayability is built on constant grinding. It seems doubtful to me to remove the Crypt. Invasion is now its analogue, because by upgrading the level of your profile and the level of the hero’s skill, you unlock appearances, colors, additional techniques for him, and so on. The Crypt mechanics was more like natural for me in this case.
Game Perfomance
We remember what this year was like and it’s simply impossible to talk about the game in 2023 without mentioning its technical condition. The Last of Us here on Steam, Star Wars Jedi Knight: Survivor, even the recent Starfield, Gollum, Immortal of Aveum and other games show us a sad tendency that games are released unfinished.
It is especially dangerous to buy games with early access, because this usually means early access to bugs and a crooked build of the game that will only be fixed for the full release, but there is nothing like that here. I played the entire early access with pleasure and without resentment.
Therefore, the fact that you buy a game, turn it on and it just works, automatically becomes an advantage.
On my PC configuration, the game works just fine, with some exceptions like 30 FPS lock on X-ray attacks, which looks very strange and noticeable.
Decent, but not revolutionary
This is just a fresh and good part of the popular fighting game, just the way we love it. But if you think of the game as a kind of restart, then there are not enough innovations for this, because of this the game even seems small and tiny.
But I would still recommend buying it and playing it yourself if you're not a fan of the series. If you are a fan of the series, then I don’t understand why you are reading this review and haven’t bought the game yet. =)
