Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin Review (Zarkonem)
This game is good and i like it. There are a few things that annoy me about it that i'm going to nitpick about but none of them are major things that really do much to ruin my play through of the game. Just makes me not really care about the post game and any subsequent play throughs.
First thing i noticed when going out into the world for the first time. The landscapes in this game feel far less polished compared to the mainline series. Mind you i've only played MH: World prior to this game and i know this is a lesser funded spinoff title so i get it. But it still kinda disappointed me. The fact that all the areas you explore use the same map tiles that have just been shifted to have their "rooms" in different orders and the way they are designed to have lots of dead ends that you feel like you need to explore because there might be something down there when there isn't kinda killed the since of exploration for me entirely.
Another thing annoying about the game is the whole silent protagonist thing. I know that the silent protagonist is a staple of the monster hunter series as a whole as it is with many gaming series. But the silent protagonist really kind of hurts the narrative in a lot of places here. There are times when the characters that usually speak on your behalf ask your character something because they had just pieced together something but instead of answering them, like any normal person would do, they just start doing something silently and make the other characters (and you by extension) try to figure out what they are trying to wordlessly say. It's quite annoying having Navirou in particular speak for you a lot of times too as he can often be very immature and stupid and there were MANY times when i wanted to tell Navirou to shut the hell up or say "Navirou! That's enough!" But of course your character just stands there making faces and lets this idiot be your voice for you.
Speaking of Navirou talking alot. Navirou will very often start talking while you're in the middle of gameplay, with his dialog box covering up the minimap and keeping you from interacting with anything else while you're trying to do things. Shut up Navirou, i'm trying to pick up these mushrooms before these monsters.... attack me.. thanks jerk. Also, i don't need you to tell me there is a Cativan post right next to me that i can plainly see and keep me from activating it while doing so or stop me every time i find a nest to tell me the exact same thing EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I see it! That's the whole reason i went this direction to begin with, SHUT UP AND LET ME GO GET THE EGG!
Despite all these complaints, as i said at the beginning, these are only nitpicks. Minor things that were annoying and made me not really care about doing the post game or want to play through the game again. I still mostly enjoyed my 74 hours i spent playing through the main storyline, trying to collect monsters and form a good team, farming up monster parts to make better gear and weapons and many of the cute and funny moments that genuinely had me laughing. Avinia meeting Tsukino was gold. So with that said, if you like the Monster Hunter series, turn based combat and creature collector games. Give this game a shot!
