Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin Review (Captain Cosmos)

If you are a Monster Hunter fan, And a fan of the JRPG Turn based genre, You will love what this game has to offer. Its a monster hunter game, with jrpg elements. not so much the other way around, but it excels in almost every area in my opinion.
Point of the game: Just like every monster hunter game, you hunt monsters. but now you can also tame them, Every monster has certain genes (Skills) unique to them, there type, and element, And there are ways that you can put ANY Gene on ANY Monster, (Gene-Swapping) Want a Great Jaggi that fires a gravios beam? SURE! WHY NOT! The game does not tell you no in this area, and i love it.
Story: The story is pretty good! but nothing over the top, there are some pretty awesome cut-scenes scattered across the almost 50 hour story line, as well as some pretty cool characters, and lots of funny little moments sprinkled in. it certainly kept my attention. and i enjoyed the monster hunter styled simplicity of "OH! LOOK! a new village, new people! and more favors to do for them and to be rewarded for!) Even though its repetitive, it never started too feel stale. Cause the characters and there background were intersting to journey with.
World Design: The world design is gorgeous, yet simple, Nothing over the top, but they do a great job at making it Bright, Vibrant, Pleasing to look at, and a cheeky jrpg element that i find very enjoyable personally, There are ALOT of fast travel points that you get acess to and alot of different biomes, that have there own regions, that vary slightly from one another. you might see the same thing recycled a couple of times, but it was nothing that felt stale or boring. due to needing different monsties to traverse them (going over that next) Every monstie has unique skills in the feild, like climbing vines, breaking rocks, swimming etc, depending on your team, you may be able to get to that silver chest your looking at, but maybe not, so balance out your roster!
Gameplay: Think Monster Hunter/Pokemon, With Rock paper scissors mechanics, Except, there are ques to know what your opponent is going to do, so you dont have to "Guess" All the time, sometimes you will, like when you fight something new, but you can learn how it behaves, and learn how to act accordingly.
There are 3 types of attacks, Power, Tech, And Speed, And they cancel each other out (in that order)
3 Forms of damage, Blunt, pierce, and striking.
And 2 weapons for each type as follows (Hammer, Hunting Horn)-(Gun-lance, Bow)-(Great sword, Sword and shield)
You can hold 3 weapons on you and change them once per turn in battle for free, as well as 6 Monsties, and change them 1 per turn also for free
Each monster has there own elemental weakness, (Elements scales VERY WELL) and certain monster parts require you to attack with certain types of attacks to break there parts to receive certain rewards. Classic MH

Customization: There are over 100+Monsties for you to collect in this game, with WELL over that many weapions for you upgrade, and armors to collect and experiment with, There is a layered armor option later in the game, Anytime you forge a new armor set. You can go to the guy and buy a layered armor version of it (FOR VERY CHEAP!) No layered weapons tho, but thats okay, cause they start looking real nice post game.
Monster Hunter Roster: Excellent, just kiss excellent, ALL of my favorite monsters are in here, plus some some nice variants. Deviants, and elder dragons are in this game, and yes you can obtain them as a monstie (MOST of them, only a few understandable exceptions) Sometimes the monsterpedia will tell you a monster cannot be chased by to its den, wich is true, but it may still be a hatch able monstie "Wink Wink"
Post Game: Naturally when you complete the MSQ of MH, there always end game. And its GREAT, I am not going to cover much of that here. but its more of everything you have been doing. But there more initiative to do it, and some of the things that you were doing, that felt unimportant, not start to feel vital to your journey as you progress into harder content.
Overall: This game is great, the story is solid, The monster roster is one of the best that really caters to the MH fans, the Pokemon system they have implemented is fantastic and does an even better job than its predecessors. On top of a beautiful open world, cheeky character, addictive combat that is fun yet also challenging. And topping it off incredible replay value with 100's of hours of content and progression to keep you going after you complete the story.
I give this a VERY SOLID 9/10 Personally.
