Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak Review (Light Wielder)
Greetings, I was surprised at the amount of negative reviews for this DLC and thought I'd share my thoughts on the game in separate sections.
The Bugs: 1. The main issue the save glitch. I'm not sure the glitch is still around nor do i know how it works. (I would recommend this anyway) But I would buy both sets when they are on sale OR buy the DLC when Rise is quite cheap.
2. I haven't noticed any other bugs since playing on Steam. IN FACT I noticed more issues on the switch then in Steam.
Hitboxes and Combat: 1. I 100% noticed the increased speed of the monsters since playing on steam and the Sunbreak monsters are some of the worst offenders of this. HOWEVER, I view this as a good things since I felt some monsters were pushovers on the switch (such as The Raths and Rath variants). Now most monsters feel like actual animals trying to fight to kill and fight for their lives.
2. There is a weird hitbox effect with some monsters in the MR rank, I'm not sure if this is because they wanted MR rank to feel more challenging or if this is because of the awesome moves some monsters pull off. However, this isn't near as bad as some of the older games and most of the time a monster's tail or other body part was in the box to begin with.
Multiplayer: Sunbreak does not add any new issues to multiplayer that Rise does not already have and with typical Capcom/Nintendo servers sometimes the connection randomly becomes poor.
Single-Player: This is one of the greatest improvements the game adds with the DLC, companions! This is a great asset when grinding for parts. You can bring two companions with their own playstyle and weapons that they can use. They can also do special tricks that normal players cannot use AND if they are downed they don't contribute to the fainting counter.
The Story/New Village: 1. For starters the new story is actually good and more fleshed out. Unlike Rise's story you meet new companions as you play through the story and they become added to the Village. They also added optional companion quests that gives characters and companions custom interactions and dialogue. The random NPCs also have interesting side-quests and dialogue that will change throughout the story.
2. I will say I was disappointed in the new cafe. It just has palicos and is basically the same animation and cutscene as the multiplayer cafe in Kamura. They added a train segment that the palicos ride on, but it just isn't enough for me to like it more. HOWEVER, for those that like the buffs of the Dango you will love the new ones in the DLC.
3. As for the mainline story, people saying that it is a disappointment is sadly mistaken. Not only are their special missions that ramp up the ecological threat of the monsters that are causing the issue (yes there is more then one), The elder dragon you fight at the end is a very unique and fun fight that reminds me of the old elderdragons (such as Cedus, Fatalis, and Dah'ren Mohran). The music and Proof of a Hero rendition also fit the Castlevania theme. The monster is also more unforgiving then most monsters I've fought in World and Rise which is a nice ending to the mainline story.
The New Maps: The new maps fit the tone of DLC quite well. Not only does the DLC add old Monster Hunter maps back, but the new maps (Including the boss maps) are a fine addition to the Monster Hunter maps.
The New Armor and Weapons: Not only do we get some excellent returning armor sets (that look epic and can be layered) but we also get some excellent new sets as well. For those looking for references and lore you will not be disappointed as this DLC is chalk full of them. The Palico and Palumute sets are also fantastic and fit the theme of the monster slain nicely. Both the palico and Palumute also come with some new animations and particle effects with their armors which is a nice addition.
New Skills: The new switch skill are a fun and more complex addition to the DLC. They are a good way to meta game for those who want the complication or a nice way to spice up your style if you want to try something more effective and new. They are also a good way to make specific strategies to defeat specific monsters if needed as some sets are good at part breaking, some are better at taking advantage of quick openings, etc.
The Monsters!: 1. I've been waiting the entire review for this; however I will try and keep this a spoiler free as possible. For those who played Monster Hunter 4 or Ultimate you will not be disappointed as a ton of fan favorites (including some of mine) return. Not only do their themes return in full force, but they feel better, more alive so to speak. And do not worry all of the new monsters decide to come at you full force and show no mercy, so be ready for them and give them the challenge they deserve!
2. The Rise monsters also integrate nicely with the added/new monsters interact and mesh well with them. The DLC also adds some new versions of the Rise quests (with some fun new surprises) that help show off this factor.
3. The flagship monster and elder dragon do not disappoint either. They nail the menacing feel quite well and have some unique moves and effects that create a fun challenge for new and experienced players alike. The monsters before them also prepare players for them as well as players will combine all they they have learned to defeat them.
4. For any world players and veteran you will also have fun with these monsters as they bring an appropriate mix of world movement and pre-world punishment. While Rise does this to a degree I feel Sunbreak does this more due to having more pre-world monsters.
5. Finally for those looking for the pain, suffering, and glory feeling of the old games this DLC does not disappoint. The post-game monsters being this challenge quite well and WILL kill you quickly if you are not paying attention. However, killing them and dawning their armor is a well earned reward.
TLDR: This DLC does Rise but better. The monsters are more ruthless, but in a way that makes the game feel more alive and entertaining to fight as they keep you on your toes. The game almost triples the content of the previous game with it's new and returning monsters, armor and weapon sets, storyline, side-quests, characters, and dialogue. The Single-Player experience is improved with the addition of companions and those that are seeking a challenge can opt to keep it to just themselves and their palicos/palumutes. Finally, for veterans of the series you will enjoy all of the returning monsters along with the post-game as it brings back the feelings from the old days.
If you got this far, thank you for your time and for reading this review. I hope this was helpful and if there are any additional questions I didn't cover let me know. I haven't posted a Rise review yet, so there may be something there that I haven't answered here because I didn't want to be redundant.
Edit: I forgot to add my overall score to the DLC. I would give it a 10/10 score for being an excellent addition to the Monster Hunter franchise.
