Mini Metro Review (PaganFears)
Mini Metro is a fun puzzle game that I can wholeheartedly recommend despite its flaws. In normal mode the maps start out relaxed and if you figure out how to build efficient networks on most maps getting the hardest achievement is rather easy. There are a few exceptions though and the random placement of stations and the weekly bonuses can sometimes screw you over on the harder maps.
The problems start here. At some point your network will get overwhelmed. Here you can either let your network fail content with the earned achievements or try to save it for longer using intense micromanagement. If you want to place towards the top in rankings be prepared to pause every second to pick up and drop off metro trains at problem stations and even to constantly build and remove one stop temporary lines to allievate the pressure. For me this endgame on maps is not that enjoyable and somewhat clashes with the chosen theme of the game.
In extreme mode lines and trains are permanent meaning you can't pick up trains and modify existing lines except for lengthening them. I strongly prefer this mode as it doesn't have such a micromanagement-heavy end phase. One negative is that besides your skills your score will also highly depend upon how much luck you have with the random station placement. Also achievements have to be done in normal mode so if you want them you are forced to play through the game that way first. At that point I got quite burned out but if I return to the game I'll probably play in extreme mode mostly.
Other issues I ran into:
- Sometimes trains will unload all passengers to then load the same ones back wasting precious time for no reason.
- Passengers are dumb, they can make huge detours (like for example travelling the longer way around a loop to their destination). These unnecessary trips can really clog your lines.
I know my review sounds quite negative but I wanted to highlight the problems. There are plenty enough reviews focusing on the positives.
