MindSeize Review (burrowstyrone)
I am EXTREMELY glad I didn't pay attention to the negative reviews and tried this game for myself instead. When I game it a first run I will admit that I started and stopped immediately because I thought the somewhat stiff movements were signs of an indie game from a team that's still learning...I'm also guilty of judging the quality of the game based on the artwork used in the opening cutscenes and technically that's not only petty, it's unfair. I was DEAD wrong about this game.
First off I had to wipe Axiom Verge 1 & 2 and AM2R off my plate and forget the control and move set I was used to and most metroidvanias play it safe because they may lose persons who can't let go of Metroid or the Castlevania games...look, LET THOSE GAMES GO and try other things.
MIND SEIZE is one of the easiest Metroidvanias to get a fully 101% completion during your first run through, this isn't due to the developers being afraid to give the player a challenge it's because the team that made this game CLEARLY knew that as soon as you get the hang of how it's played you're going to reward yourself with the exploration side of things.
Here's one of the main critiques I read in negative reviews...MOBILITY, but what I've found is every upgrade you collect makes the game more familiar to long time fans of the genre then all of a sudden you instinctively collect everything without a guide or faq. There is absolutely no way this game was this good/simple because I'm skilled but I haven't realized it as yet lol.
THE GAME REQUIRES PATIENCE in the beginning not because it's bad and you have to let it grow on you, it's like that because the moment you start collecting UPGRADES for the MAG suit I kid you not, you will be ZIPPING all over the dam map.
The Story May be it's weakest area, there a beginning, middle and a coherent end, there were tons of great themes and philosophical ideas that could have happened (Think Deus Ex Human Revolution) so I think that was a missed opportunity, at one point there's a Sentient Planet . But it was at least satisfying and to the point.
As far as a rank is concerned, I'd say its like a 7 because I think with more time and money there are somethings on the cutting room floor they wanted to add but couldn't. The weapons you collect and movement upgrades shows are sure signs of player preference and fighting style they wanted to add more complexity to but couldn't so I'd like to see that in a sequel. I had a weapon load out of choice not because one weapon was better than the next, it was based on how I wanted to play the game.
Play the game, stick around, it's not a hard as a Soulslike, but you will die a few times and it's not a run and gun, you have to consider your enemies before you fight and you have bars to manage, those upgrade frequently as well.
P.S. You're gonna find the sprite bits on the main ship charming and you're gonna wish the game had a few other populated hubs on other planets for the main character to wheel around in, explore and talk to more npc's.
You'll see,,,
