Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Review (KitKat)
Okay so. MGS:V
F**k what do I say about this game that hasn't already been said. I don't think there is anything left to say, to be honest.
It's amazing. I'd say it completely re-defined the open world gameplay experience. Have you played Breath of the Wild? Sniper Elite 4 or 5? You know the complete and utter freedom you experience in those games? They find their roots here. In this literally unfinished 2015 release that would be Kojima's last with the horror show that is modern Konami. Damn, I can't believe this game is almost 10 years old now.
In all seriousness, this game drops you in one of two utterly MASSIVE maps, gives you an objective, and says go. Everything from there is entirely up to you. Say you have to kill a target. How do you want to do that? Do you want to just snipe him from a mile away? Can do. Infiltrate in close and silently take him down? Done. Go guns blazing like Duke Nukem and slaughter him and all of his cronies? Ezpz. Run him over with a tank? Lol do it. Lure him into a trap made with an inflatable version of yourself and an electrified telephone poll only to pull him into a wormhole and force him to join your army? Yeah you can do that too. If you can imagine it, you can do it. And you can do so as any one of an army of characters of men and women wearing anything from mega armored battle gear to a suit and tie to a bikini. Truly. The choice is yours.
This game is an utter masterpiece right up until the end where it ends rather abruptly because the final mission was quite literally cut off. This is entirely Konami's fault as they fired Kojima mid development, leaving the game unfinished. That said, you can watch the unfinished build of the level on youtube and the rest of the game is 99% utterly amazing. Oh yeah and the first mission is a complete slog that takes WAY too long because Hideo Kojima is an insane person.
9.5/10
