Mediterranea Inferno Review (Yuucifer)

loved milky way prince so i wanted to check this game out by the creator, lorenzo, as well! here are some of my thoughts:

amazing art style that is very confident in itself and unique
the italian culture in this game is very beautiful and strong
i thought the ui was interesting. i liked how the text boxes would move around the screen depending on who was talking. text was glitchy sometimes though
2 or 3 times i had issues loading a save file (not loading from the title, but from within a different save file)
the mirage scenes were always pretty cool. loved the eerie yet vibrant vibes they had each time
TW: the game is heavily centered around substance abuse, sexual relations, mental health issues, etc.
upon reading some of the negative reviews, a lot of people have said that they don't understand what the game is trying to say, or what is even going on at a deeper level. however, i believe this game definitely speaks to themes such as queer identity, rebellion, revolution, etc. more intensely, not just "toxic gay guys on vacation" that one might see at the surface level.
this game also touches on how the covid pandemic affected people, specifically young adults finding their way in the world and navigating the transition through their 20s, which i'm sure a lot of people can relate to. having no contact with others, living in isolation, feeling like the world has forgotten about you, losing your identity then trying to rediscover it... all these aspects tie in to the overall narrative in this game.
as other reviews have said about the main characters not being likable: they aren't supposed to be. these characters and their feelings are representing the negative feelings, emotions, and actions that can build up within people who have dealt with certain traumas, depressions, etc. though they are best friends, they are toxic as hell to each other, feeding off of each other's insecurities and faults. these characters are meant to show the extremes of certain feelings. there are times throughout the story when you may feel bad for a certain character, yet in the end, they don't redeem themselves; all of them stick with their childlike ways of wanting to be noticed, loved, appreciated for who they are and having their identity accepted, all while doing whatever they can to get there, even if it means hurting each other and seeking revenge.

if you're looking for a deep and passionate game that dives into what it means to be queer, to be noticed, to be accepted, to get acknowledgement, consider playing!
