Max Payne Review (aQuadude248)
A classic third-person shooter that perfectly blends white-hot action, blood-soaked drama and a touch of the macabre and horrifying to create a game that well-deserves the praise it's gotten over the near 25 years since its' release. I really don't have much else to say about it, it's just that good.
HOWEVER, be aware that if you decide to pick up this version, you'll have to install some fanmade patches to get the game to even run, as this is a very old PC game that, to my knowledge has not had a lot in the way of support to make it run correctly on modern Windows 11 machines, which is what I have.
The patches I installed were the Startup Hang Patch, (to get the game to appear at all after launching) a Sound Fix patch (mirrored by Special Agent Squeaky; this adds back in missing sounds and prevents it from completely breaking altogether) and Crosire's d3d8to9 wrapper. (which from what I understand makes the game run in a previous version of DirectX, which fixes NPC's getting stuck and causing softlocks) All of this wasn't more than dragging and dropping the files into the game directory, and once I did that the game ran like a dream.
If you're willing to do a bit of work on your part to get this game running, I'd definitely say pick this game up once you have the chance, as it's an absolute blast of a time.
