Marvel's Midnight Suns: Redemption Review (Askias)
I'm being *very* generous, but I already gave a negative review of the Deadpool stuff and I don't want to double up on a lot of the same issues. And truth be told this DLC is better than the Good, the Bad and the Undead, despite still not being worth the price tag unless you REALLY like Venom.
Headliner is Venom. Unlike Deadpool, whose writing let him down, Venom fits the Midnight Suns atmosphere a lot better and the fact that he doesn't come out of left field means he slots better into the overall narrative. It's not stellar but it'll do. His unique mechanic, Ravenous, encourages saving his attacks for big threats since his attacks over the turn lower his offense as his hunger gets sated (because... well, it's Venom and most of his attacks involve biting into enemies). Since the game already has a fair bit of characters who enjoy hitting the gruntwork with quick cards, going the other direction helps Venom stand out.
The new enemies are... the same as the ones from the Deadpool DLC. That's not good. The Vampyres weren't a great enemy to begin with, and this DLC adds no new forms or abilities besides the DLC boss, Dracula, who you can only fight in one mission with Hunter, Venom and Spider-man. The big boss of the Vampyres' deal is that he gets counterattacks and HP drain when he attacks or is attacked by a character with bleed. In-character, yes. Exciting, no. He's not much of a character either, only appearing briefly at the end and having barely any substance besides being an obstacle.
The story, unlike the Good, the Bad and the Undead, has a little more on the bone. 3 missions is still very little but because it continues from Venom's appearance in the main game it's less jarring. And while the DLC boss is as much of a snooze as the one from the previous DLC, there are copious amounts of Mephisto who at least fills the scenes he's in. I can't say the Devil himself comes off as very intimidating, but he does fill the role of manipulator that the 'big bowling pin to knock over' villains don't. You don't fight Mephisto, by the way, which is fine. The events feel less filler than the Deadpool DLC, even if they don't end up amounting to much besides giving me One More Day flashbacks. Venom joining the team is handled fine and I kind of regret there's little reaction from anyone not Peter Parker to him being around. Sure the Midnight Suns had plenty of edgier characters already, but Venom is something else.
Overall, I don't recommend buying this DLC at full price, but eh, it's content.
