Maneater: Truth Quest Review (Dakuwanga)

One good bite deserves another

Setting

This DLC continues the story straight from where the main game ended. The Maneater discovers a secret military research facility not far from Port Clovis. But more important than that, she senses something is threatening her status as the Apex Predator...

What is new?

New Region: Plover Island

The military facility of Site P is a new region with new collectibles, but especially with new enemies.

The Plover Island region is inhabited by higher-leveled mutant marine predators, such as Shadow Orca, Bone Sperm Whale and Electric Great White.

These mutant predators have access to some of the same evolutionary powers as the Maneater and have an immunity to poison, electric shocks or stunning, depending on their mutation. The important thing to remember is that by having a certain evolved body equipped, the Maneater will be immune to the mutants' special powers as well, but in that case neither will be able to use its powers on the other.

In addition, the humans will now attack you with far deadlier boats. Many will make use of highly damaging torpedoes, shark shields, or both. So be prepared for a fight.
Personally, I found the increase in difficulty a welcome addition – most of the boats used by humans in the main game felt pretty easy to defeat. At least as far as I'm concerned.

New evolution set: Atomic Evolution

A full set of body evolutions for the Maneater. As you probably guessed, it gives the shark the special ability of firing an atomic breath a la Godzilla. I wouldn't consider the atomic breath necessarily mandatory, but I find it handy, for it can make short work of some of the higher leveled marine predators and help against the military boats.
Be prepared to make use of nutrient-boosting evolutions and to do more secondary quests though, seeing this evolution set costs far more nutrients than any other.

New Secondary Quests

In addition to new landmarks for Plover Island, there are two new quest types: timed races and Truth Questers.
Some people have complained about the timed races, but the way I see it, they can be beaten fairly easily with Shadow evolutions and the speed bonus they provide.
Truth Questers are tinfoil hat wearing conspiracy theorists who will appear both around Plover Island and Port Clovis. These guys are impervious to shark's sonar, but I wouldn't say they're necessarily that difficult to find. And finding them is recommended, for eating them provides a large amount of nutrients.
Oh, and speaking of conspiracy theorists, the narrator of the game has become one as well. This creates the minor problem that if you liked his original lines better, you might want to play the game with this DLC deactivated.

The Good
+ A new region complete with new landmarks
+ More human bounty hunters and new marine predators to meet (and kill)
+ The Radioactive evolution set can come in handy and be fun

Not so good
- Progressing through the DLC campaign requires doing same quests multiple times. Can become repetitive, but shouldn't take too long

- Several people have complained about the DLC crashing often or other technical issues. Possibly poor optimization?
- You'll get to fight new enemies and bosses, but not that much in terms of story expansion.

Verdict

7/10

I consider Maneater: Truth Quest overall a fun little addition to the game. Although, there are times it feels like the DLC should have offered more. I can't speak much for the technical issues, as I haven't experienced an excess of those, but they are something one might want to be prepared for.

I recommend having this for the complete game. If you're unsure, you might want to get the DLC while it is on sale.
