Mafia III Review (The Shadow)

**I've beaten the game on Hard difficulty.**
TL;DR: Do not believe the negative reviews about repetitive game-play. My current play-through is not repetitive at all. Graphics not an issue. All around not at all like Mafia 1 or 2, but a style of game that is all its own in the trilogy. Play it. Enjoy it. You will not be disappointed. ((unless your goal is to speed run the game, then you will find nothing but faults. This is a Mafia game. It's all about the story and character development. Speed running and skipping cut-scenes...that's on you.))
9.0 out of 10.
****Completion Update: Outstanding game. The cut-scenes in itself are amazing. Just saying "John Donovan" is amazing, as both a cut-scene character and one that I get to work with though the game. Many laugh out loud moments between Lincoln and John. And the same interactions with all the bosses. The banter and their reactions were great. I finished the game with all mob bosses alive, and not broke at all. Don't play it for the achievements. Most work, but from what I've read you would have to play in one sitting certain achievements (over many days I would have unlocked quite a few). Again, don't play it for the achievements.
Play it for the story: "Lincoln Clay, just got back from Vietnam, to watch his family die. He now has to avenge their deaths, with the help from mob bosses, rackets, and his own mind and conscience, to get to the one that started it all (and that damn casino)."
Spoilers:
The choices you make in either keeping a racket boss, or killing (I kept all mine) but some you had to kill, and the story bosses the deaths were so deathly, that it was satisfying knowing my character was getting the revenge he needed.
-- I grew my pot farm to the max level, so that gave me great money because I grew pot the mob wanted;
--The boss interactions at the "round table" were amazing and it was cool to see how pissed the got when they lost control of something, and how happy they were later when you gave them something else;
--The final boss shot himself, so I didn't have to;
--I received the Vito ending, which is one of 3, on that path, because he had the most control over districts and rackets, (and he had the best character upgrades compared to the other 2) where I didn't want to run the city. I left it to them, (which there are 3 character endings for myself). . I knew exactly how I was going to end the game given the options because it fit my play-style. You would have to play the game again on the other hand to see one of the other boss endings.
After the credits, you have the ability to choose one of Lincoln's 3 endings because the game resumes after the end boss and you could drive to the other objective, so you could effectively see all 3 Lincoln endings, but really the first one is the only one that matters, because not knowing what they were you chose based on your first thought. You are scratching the itch to see the other endings;
The cut-scene that involves John Donovan and the Senate hearing, that interrupts the credits:...I had no clue, and it was amazing. That Senator was in on it, and he didn't have a chance against the detective prowess of John Donovan. It solidified a great ending.

The description I reviewed before never changed. I enjoyed all of this game. Now, collecting all the playboy mags, and the album covers, and the others, is great filler, but by no means needed to play this game, but its nice to look at before shutting the game down for the night. I didn't collect all of them.
-The music is outstanding, and the news reports after a big event, was very inclusive, and it made me feel like I was part of the city, even if the cops and the citizens reacted no different before or after the killings.
-Repetitive driving (but not boring repetitive) How else were they going to get revenge on you if you didn't drive?? Definitely hard points in the game. I completed this game on Hard difficulty.
--9.0 out of 10. (I still cannot believe when i get into the water the only way I could get out was jumping onto a dock. It made for some very long swimming sequences, with the crocodiles. That really was my only negative for the game.)
--I had a friend watch me beat this, and I even analyzed which choice was the best. The bosses work with you a lot in the game, and it felt wrong to take that away from them in the choices, but you could stab them in the back if you wanted.
--I guess my only other negative was what game to start playing next after beating this game and ending the trilogy. I decided on RDR2 (yeah, still only a couple hours in that).
--I was really sad that the game ended and became one of my best games I've ever beaten (Max Payne, Far Cry similarities (could you imagine if they actually had "BULLET TIME" in this game??)**
The preacher really did not like how I turned out. I watched 2 of the 3 endings and he cried both times.
9.0 (end updated review)

Yeah, there is a lot of driving to get from one mission to another. But the driving mechanic, using xbox controller, is outstanding. Between the burnouts and the drifting, and the hot key to slow down time to make turns at 100 mph.
But, that isn't why I'm interrupting my game to write this review...
Repetitive my ass. I've been to an island to stop a nuke, and I'm currently in a nightclub to catch a woman that wronged a waitress. That's in addition to the other gangs that I'm working for.
Also, the graphics are outstanding. After a rain, with the pavement still drying out so pools of water are all over the road.
The cut scenes work to fill in a backstory about who you are, along with the gaps in certain story lines.
It is not at all like Mafia 1 or 2. It is its own in the trilogy. If you like the linear play of mafia 1 and 2, have at it.
If you like to determine your own pace and style play Mafia 3. Between the races with the certain types of cars and killing everyone that isn't on your side Its a game all its own.
I will say, not having the cops chase you for running 120 mph through town, and running almost all the red lights, is a bummer, but the cops are f'ing ruthless when they are chasing you, part because you are black, but mostly they are with the mafia anyway.
The game is outstanding in its own right: the graphics setting the tone for a dreary 1968 southern Louisiana era, to the racial undertones for the time (not at all in your face to remind you, but are there nonetheless), and satisfying killing for the ones that work for the ones that did you wrong. The stats for the weapons are spot on, as if you don't headshot someone who is a decent distance away, you probably aren't taking them down without some ammo being spent.
I haven't had any issues with graphics stutter (although, I stopped overclocking my 4090, as there are moments that the game will black out, but as my ICUE display on my cooler blacks out too, I'm going for a windows thing, not a game thing, but coincidence). The game plays beautifully on 2560x1440 at 165 (no v-sync) and all settings on high (13900K, 32GB ram, 24GB video, not saying at all that you need something like this to play it though).
I am playing the definitive edition, so I can't attest that the game before may have been bad. But the negative reviews i'm reading now I don't know if they are even playing the same game as I am.
