Mafia III Review (OptimalButthole)
Well, the game is actually really good. Though it was a very long game, it remained consistent with really good writing the whole way through. I’ve also never seen a game done like this before, in a documentary style, and also the topics they discussed, I guess. The N word was used so much but the voice acting felt so believable. I don’t think a game like this will ever be done again anytime soon. I feel that if you are interested in playing the game and you don’t, you’re just missing out. The game is legitimately a period piece and is one of the best singleplayer open world experiences there is.
The Good
- The story is really good.
- Graphics are great
- Though some of the music is good, I felt that there wasn’t enough tracks for such a long game. I eventually opened up youtube while playing and started listening to 1968 music and the 60’s music.
- The driving controls is really good
- You can slowmo whenever you want when driving.
- Each boss that you have gives you powers. They are all good in their own way but Vitos one let’s you summon warriors with guns who kill for you. When things get tough, it’s always nice to see them come running and just makes things easier.
- The world of the game is really nice and enjoyable to drive though.
- After something big happens in the game, when you have the radio on, it will talk about it.
- Some dialogue in the game made me laugh. I liked the smoke break scene and when I drove that Mexican guy and I hit a car and he yelled.
- If a character is in your car and they are talking about the story and you hit something, they’ll pause and then say something like “So what was I talking about, oh right” and I thought that was really cool. Everyone did it differently which was cool too.
- I love the nightcrawler vehicle. I get to go really fast and it’s really durable.
- There a lot of things you can collect and find like album covers now, but the playboy magazine is different this time around. It really isn’t about seeing naked woman. Well they used only magazines from the time period but what’s cool is the interview pages. There’s one on Stanley Kubrick, The beatles, Some guy who went to Yale and was counselling people to I think not go to war in veitnam, some guy who went to Harvard and tried to make automobile makers make their cars safer, and more like some author who made breakfast at tiffany’s. These pages are thick with words and go on for 9+ and 19+ pages.
- Crocodiles in one scene of the game were spinning people and people were yelling and it was scary but also quite a sight.
- Game ran good.
- To be honest, the 2k launcher isn’t bad. In game you can stop it from launching and it doesn’t run in the background which was nice. Only problem I have with it is that it requires windows 10 and up to work.
- Checkpoints are pretty good. I got softlocked when I got into a car with a story npc, cause the game wouldn’t let me out of the car to open the garage door. Luckily reloading the last checkpoint automatically opened the garage door, so they must have thought of that happening which I’m thankful for.
- You can flip your car.
- UI is really good and colourful.
- The game tells you what is a main quest and what is optional.
The Bad
- There’s a bug where the “X” image would not appear. So like, if you had to destroy something by holding “X”, it will not work sometimes or it won’t even show. Reloading checkpoint fixes this for the most part but it keeps coming back. It starts to happen near end game.
- Only one save.
- Cops and enemies just know where you are when they shouldn’t.
- Npcs jump toward you when you are driving.
- When you die, you lose half of your money. Doesn’t matter if you were carrying $75 or $20 000. It’s such a bad system to have it be done like that. Once you get the ability to call someone to pick up money, You have to remember to use it before you go into a mission area.
- Too many things to collect. I would say not to do most of it except for most of the playboys only. It’s a waste of time even though you get see many locations of the game.
- Main missions have too many filler objectives. You don’t need to do them and just do the kill people ones but when you are just starting playing this game and don’t know how the systems work, you wouldn’t know if you had to do them or not.
- Most missions are essentially doing the same thing just different person which makes sense but I felt the game could have been shorter.
Conclusion
I liked the game and it made me listen to music from the 60’s which I would have never really listened to thoroughly. I now have a ton of new songs that I like from that era because of this game and some persons playlist on youtube. I just wish the game was shorter.
