Mafia II: Definitive Edition Review (Fluu)
Loved Mafia 1 Definitive Edition, for Mafia 2 Definitive Edition was a meh experience for me. So while the first game got an amazing overall haul with graphics, sounds and so on it feels like the biggest improvement on this game has probably been bigger resolution support(if that) and native 60+ fps but thats about it. On the other hand that came at a cost of a host of issues that from what I could read online was not present in the original game and that the studio that did the "remake" where unable to didn't bother to resolve.
Is it worth playing? Sure if you get it on a good sale. Probably not worth getting over the original if you already have that.
DLCs needs a section for themselves
There are 3 DLCs in total, the first 2 from a new character called Jimmy, both of them are free roam with basically no story/cutscenes, all its missions are time trials and a big score board and constant +100, +200 points all over the place. For fuck sake just let me try to enjoy the game play but nooooo. Also if you fail them you have to start over from the start of the mission every single f...ing time so I did not bother very much with these. The last DLC is from Joe's POV while Vito is in prison to fill in the gaps it starts of with some story elements but after 30 mins maybe you are thrown into the same free roam cr*p again and now have to do the sh!tty time trial missions with scores to be able to get story missions and in total there is maybe 1 hour of story missions, so its better than the first 2 DLCs but still utter trash and nothing compared to the main game itself.
Pro's
Its still Mafia 2, the story is decent enough to warrent playing through it.
60+ FPS support natively(it still starts out being set to 30 fps limit which makes you wonder what the hell they where thinking...)
No real improvements over the original apart from this.
Con's
All sorts of graphical issues, hairlines not fitting to the head, people looking at the wrong things when speaking, textures going haywiere.
Steam overlay lags and seems poorly made.
Every time you start the game PLEASE LOGIN WITH YOUR 2K ACC!!!! No thx!
DLCs - they are awful
Game has 2 different buttons for stealth kills, why?????
