Limbo Review (LunaRaine)
Damn, what a brutal game. It’s your simple side scroller with puzzle elements in the form of deadly obstacles and those death animations will haunt you!
Overall, the atmosphere, especially in the first half of the game, is amazing. It’s dark, it’s brutal, you have no clue what is going on, you’re just a little kid running from deadly traps, and after having played through it twice I still don’t know what the story is about.
The puzzle difficulty has a nice curve. It starts out very simple, explaining the concepts of the game, then makes things a bit more difficult by adding a secondary puzzle element you need to solve in order to progress the main puzzle. Then it just starts turning the entire world upside down and before you know it, you even have gravity manipulation puzzles (no clue how those fit into the story, but they were nicely challenging nonetheless).
The end feels a bit tedious as during a first playthrough you’re likely to die quite a lot of times trying to figure out how everything works, but the checkpoints are very forgiving which is good for its late game difficulty.
Overall, I really enjoyed my time with this one and it’s definitely worth it’s price tag!
Achievements
There are 13 achievements in total with 12 of them involving you finding a hidden glowing egg throughout the game. 11 of which will be acquired during a normal playthrough, and the 12th being hidden in a secret slightly more difficult level. The last achievement might be the most tedious one by the looks of it as you have to finish the game in a single sitting while not dying more than 5 times. But if you have played through the entire game already and even have a walkthrough on hand, most of the nasty traps can easily be avoided. I did it in about 2 hours with 4 deaths on my first try! So, easy 100%.
Note: This game has a Demo which also comes with 13 achievements. Those achievements, however, are just the full game’s achievements copy pasted and are entirely unobtainable without cheating (but that could get you banned/restricted on third party achievement hunting sites, so beware!)
