Like a Dragon Gaiden: The Man Who Erased His Name Review (soupcrush)
LIKE A DRAGON GAIDEN: THE MAN WHO ERASED HIS NAME
alright, 31 hours in, i think it is time to talk about this beast of a game.
first off, the game is fire. for real. it made me so mad at times, and I will get to that in a sec, but no matter how much i raged, i still gotta say i recommend it. just do not buy it full price, wait for a discount at least.
the story? that stuff is crazy good. i loved it. but i aint gonna talk about it here. not trying to drop any spoilers, even by accident. you should go in blind and experience it yourself. i really do not think you will regret it. (unlike that one clown in the reviews who spoiled the damn ending without even censoring anything. i saw it before i could finish the game. i swore at that dude so much, i do not forgive you bro, you are the reason i got trust issues now.)
now let me talk about the stuff that had me fuming.
the fighting system!!! clean as hell. feels great, animations are dope. but on the streets and in the tournament, random gang dudes and sweaty enemies just roll up and beat your ass like it is nothing. you could be built like a tank, it does not matter. you press Q to dodge and boom, some dude comes from the back and slaps you before you even see him. no chance to dodge. that crap made me lose it.
some tournament guys,,, their dodges are unreal. like you try to hit them, and they are just gone. you manage to land one punch and you feel like you just won a boss fight. they are not unbeatable but damn, they mess with your brain.
and those side missions from akame... at first,,, super fun. i was enjoying em one by one. but later in the game they start dragging. like, go here, then go over there, then back again... after a while it gets real annoying.
back to the tournament. the whole system is fun, no lie. but there is one dumb thing. the people you recruit for your team are actually stronger than kiryu. i am serious. i ended up using them in fights more than kiryu himself. not saying that was a bad thing because seeing new moves was fun, but still kiryu felt weak as hell even with four toptier items on him.
also, lemme just say, the tournament enemies again,,, they will make you wanna slam your keyboard. they are tanky, dodge like crazy, hit hard. i was this close to breaking my monitor.
and the ranking system, mad weird. bronze, silver, gold, plat. sounds cool until you get an S rank easily in a plat match but can barely get an A in a gold one. maybe i just suck but that stuff felt off to me.
SHISHIDO
now lemme talk about this clown named SHISHIDO
what the hell were the devs thinking? who came up with this fight? if I spent 31 hours in the game, i swear 15 of them were on this guy.
and no, it is not cause he got a massive health bar or something. i wish that was the case. they put in a QTE, you know that blue circle that pops up and you gotta hit a button in time? yeah, that. if you miss it, you fail. and it is not like you get a bad ending or anything, nah, they make you restart the boss fight from the top.
why? why do i gotta suffer like this just to end the fight properly? they call it some honorable finish or whatever. i do not know how others got past it, i still havent. but I had to get this off my chest. if I ever manage to beat him, maybe I will update this.
