Lies of P Review (shu_time)
After Elden Ring, I had given up on finding a good game in the souls/souls-like genre, but this one made me believe. My personal take on Lies of P would be that the game is insanely good, barring some minor flaws (considering the playerbase to consist of both veterans and newbies).
The Pros:
1. Story & Voice Acting
- First, the story, which was super gripping and had me guessing on the motives of the main players till the end of my first play through.
- The DLC tease at the end of the credits has me really exited for what's to come next.
- Each-and-every NPC is fully voice-acted, and have their own stories which have been laid out mesemerisingly.
- The quality of the voice acting and interconnectedness of each NPC's story with that of P made for really great immersion, and I ended up really caring for each one of them
- The lie system in the gane and the effects it had on the story and ending were also immensely enjoyable
2. Theme
- As with all other souls-likes, the overall theme of Lies of P was dark and melancholic, but the setting and lore felt super unique which had me hyped for the gane well before its release.
- This game's the closest we get to Bloodborne on PC, and will surely be a classic in the genre of lovecraftian horror games.
3. Combat
- Very fast-paced, very smooth, extremely enjoyable.
- I loved the variety of ways we could combine weapons and legion arms to tackle the game in different manners.
- The game really rewards parrying perfectly and overall the implementation of the fast-paced style was right down my alley. LOVED IT!!!
4. Music
- See, I'm a huge music buff, so whenever a game features good OST, it gets brownie points from my end.
- In the case of Lies of P, I was robbed of all my brownies.
- Really loved all the tracks that we received as collectibles that could be played.
- Also loved the overall music of the game, especially the part right at the end after deciding what to do with Sophia.
The Cons:
1. Combat
- I know most of you will be confused seeing this mentioned under both pros and cons, but it definitely belongs in both.
- As mentioned earlier, the combat is super fast-paced (which I loved), but some fights are overtuned which make it impossible to "reflexively" respond to some enemy moves (instead having to respond to visual cues due to the actual attacks being faster than a person's average response time).
- 70-80% of the game felt pretty easy, with random difficulty spikes at some end-games bosses, especially the last.
- All builds don't work well with all enemy types due to the way combat works, and it seems to favour technique (dexterity) focused builds more.
2. Online Elements
- A bit of a stretch, but I would've personally loved to be able to play this co-op with a friend.
Summary:
I can confidently say that Lies of P hits the single digit ranks among my all-time favourite games, and that's saying something since I've played a lot of games. Overall I really liked the combat and music of the gane, with bonus points for the unique setting and lore. For fans of the souls-like genre, Lies of P is a MUST TRY from my end!
