LEGO Batman 3: Beyond Gotham Review (Wiffle_Snuff)
Another banger Lego game, I did really enjoy it, but it's flaws were really noticeable and frustrating. I'll start by listing off the good.
I first played this game after recently 100%ing Lego Batman 2, which was a phenomenal game. I was worried this wouldn't be up to par with that peak gameplay, but as I got to around the 60% mark it had proven it's not just a sequel to Lego Batman 2, but a continuation. This game combines past features from the 2 erstwhile Lego Batman games and makes it unique, it provides for a familiar but new experience which is really amazing. Furthermore the character roster is phenomenal. The sheer quantity of characters to play as, abilities to explore, some being kind of hidden (e.x. Wonder Woman mind control, Zatanna's seemingly non gold destroying laser beam destroying gold, Terra being able to submerge in Swamps, I forget who but there's a character I thought couldn't dig, but they could dig, Martian Manhunter using Plastic Man vents, etc.) Unique dialogue for many playable characters, including but not limited to Poison Ivy (my personal fav unique voiceline), Wonder Woman, Cyborg, etc.
The entertaining dialogue and short stories told in quests, exploring multiple small hubs, finding secrets which gave achievements, which are also a nice addition to a lego game on steam, I love achievements.
The story was good, I think it was very different than in Lego Batman 2 but with ideas stemming from it.
Last but not least character design. It was great in Lego Batman 2 but in this game it's just far better. While I am sad that some characters iconic looks from the previous games were changed, such as the penguin, others drastically improved, like Wonder Woman.
To be honest I can say a lot more good stuff about this game but I will just move onto the bad things.
1: Save data issues. I don't know what causes it, how to fix or prevent it, but all I know is I lost a total of 3-4 hours of progress overall due to save issues. This is a MAJOR flaw and cannot be ignored.
2: bugs with stuff loading. when it came to 100%ing each unique lantern planet, it was mostly fine, but then some bugs occurred which made things impossible or drastically harder. It only takes a simple reload to fix, but the problem is that it didn't seem like a bug until I saw how it was supposed to look after checking a guide. That's just hubs, I had to exit and re-enter the Block Hopper minigame due to spawning in the block. Some things also don't load when flying like the cow gang on the moon, flags too.
3. Achievements locked behind a paywall. I bought this game in a bundle that was worth it, which I believe is the best way to purchase this game and the other 2. I loved the free DLC which I didn't mention, but the paid DLC annoys me. I'm sure it's fun and cool but it being required for about 30 achivements (I think it may be 29) is just stupid. Paid DLC existing is fine but to have achievements that require it just makes me sad.
4. Dumb minikits and building stuff. Pretty self explanatory, some of those minikits were dumb to obtain in levels, either way too tedious and time consuming alone, or fast easy ones that needed unskippable story objectives to obtain. Building stuff was annoying too as you had to wait for the bricks to bounce sometimes, or you couldn't tell they were bouncing.
Overall a great game though, I forgot what I gave Lego Batman 2 on my rating but this game is whatever that was minus 0.5, again not worth full price IMO buy in a bundle on sale.
