Legend of Grimrock Review (efir)

This game was one of the first dungeon crawlers I've ever played. And right from the start, I can already tell it's a perfect entry point for beginners in the genre. The real-time, grid-based combat is both satisfying and unique (at least for me as a newcomer). Proper positioning and kiting enemies, especially the larger ones, are really the star of this game. The leveling system and classes is easy to understand and rewarding. Nearly every aspect of the game is enjoyable and tactile, from inventory management to the crafting and magic systems. The latter strikes a nice balance between simple one-button casting and more complex methods like drawing sigils (as in Arx Fatalis).
One minor downside for me was the game's heavy reliance on puzzles and secrets. While they are fun to discover and solve, and are never unfair (unlike the random secret walls in King's Field), I found myself enjoying the combat, leveling, and looting aspects more. Additionally, I wish there was a bit more variety in the visual design of the levels.
I personally would have liked the inclusion of an underground settlement with NPCs and shops, which would greatly enhance the game's atmosphere and potentially add some interesting mechanics. It's worth noting that the sequel to this game has made significant improvements in many areas, including level variety, with outdoor areas and true verticality.
Overall, this is a solid game, and considering how cheap it can be during sales, it's a no-brainer to pick up.
