Learn Japanese to Survive! Hiragana Battle Review (Danielman0125)
This is indeed a game.
It has watered down mechanics from the original Final Fantasy, with the attacks being determined by your ability to recognize the hiragana characters. It's simple and effective, albeit a bit tiring after a while. It is a bit primitive (also similar to FF1) especially for a 2016 game, but really that didn't bother me at all.
This game has the best writing I've ever seen in a Japanese language learning game. It's a genius work of ironic drama, where you cringe so hard that you can't help but laugh. This is the best work of satire that I have ever seen. (It is exactly as good as you would expect from an educational game.)
That aside, the story is as good as an educational story can be. Seriously, I could not imagine a story any better without leaving behind the point of the game, learning hiragana. But clearly it is not going to win any awards, story-wise.
The soundtrack... was cool for the first few hours. Then it was a bit annoying up until the final boss fight. The tracks are not bad, but they are reused a lot. Though really none of the sound is necessary (except maybe the syllable pronunciations), so you could just mute it. However, after listening to the same tracks for hours, the new music for the final boss seemed all the more rad.
Speaking of the final boss fight. It was good. Relative to the rest of the game, it was excellent. It had a cool song, a relatively sufficient challenge, and it caught me a bit off guard (which is good).
All in all, it is an okay game, and quite a good learning tool.
Arigatou gozaimasu!
