Layers of Fear: Inheritance Review (Veggie Vader)
Not as good as the main game.
Time takes its toll on everything that surrounds us. It destroys what is physical, crumbling even the sturdiest foundations, and it destroys our minds - our memories - shaping and twisting them into something new. You are never ready to face the past, but the past never lets you go. And so I find myself at the door, the handle disturbingly cold to the touch. I pull it open and enter what was once a place of solitude turned into a nightmare. I’m home, Father.
Story
Layers of Fear: Inheritance expands the plot from Layers of Fear and tells the story of the painter’s daughter, who comes back to her childhood home to face her past. Can she forgive her father, or will she resent all that has happened? Relive her experiences and witness the full scope of the tragedy that has swallowed up the family. Lead the daughter through what’s left of the mansion and take part in the madness that her father bestowed upon the whole family. Face the memories of her past and shape them into the destiny that awaits her.
Gameplay
The gameplay has similar mechanics as the main game: walking, exploring, triggering scripted events. There are three different endings.
Environment & Scares
You return to the same mansion, years after the events of the main game. The mansion is more ruined and overgrown than before - dusty, sunlit, and deteriorated. You experience flashbacks to her childhood, where the world transforms into surreal, often frightening scenes reflecting how a child would interpret abuse or neglect. The DLC introduces new rooms and areas, but reuses much of the original house.
Visual Design & Sound Design
Basically the same as the main game. You’re seeing the world not as a delusional adult, but as a damaged child recalling the past. Some sections are drawn in crayon-like, childlike visuals, emphasizing innocence tainted by trauma.
Constructive Criticism
The DLC is very short and is more of a “mini-epilogue” than a true expansion and was quite boring.
The jump scares are not as well-crafted as the main game where many times there was a loud noise but I could not see anything that was supposed to scare me. I just knew that something happened somewhere.
The Verdict
Layers of Fear: Inheritance is not that great, but you could buy it for a cheap price if you want to expand the story a bit more.
