Labyrinth of the Demon King Review (bronzin54)

Game Summary/Overview

Labyrinth of the Demon King is a First-Person Dungeon-Crawler akin to FromSoft's King's Field series that also blends the Psychological Survivor-Horror of Silent Hill and is a perfect marriage between the two. As an Ashigaru (foot soldier) in the midst of Feudal Japan, it's your obligation to search for your Lord and uncover the mystery as to what may have happened, all while exploring the treacherous and haunting dungeons of the Demon King. Reminiscent to King's Field; Labyrinth of the Demon King puts a heavy emphasis on exploration, environmental storytelling, player immersion and puzzle/riddle solving.

But be warned; in the same vein as Silent Hill, not everything is as what it seems...are the horrors that you're facing really happening in reality? Or is it all inside or your head? The lines between fantasy and realty are blurred, and it's up to you to make that distinction.

Visuals/Presentation

If it wasn't obvious enough, the visuals have a low-poly aesthetic paying homage to PS1-era horror games; namely Silent Hill (1999). Right from the get-go, the atmosphere is eerily, bleak, disturbing and depressing, giving a strong sense of something not being quite right which only further motivates you into your journey. The sound design and ambience is oddly calming yet terrifying at the same time, giving you a chance to breath while keeping your guard up.

Gameplay/Combat

If you've ever played a King's Field game, the more recent Lunacid or any 1st Person Dungeon Crawler for that matter, then you should more or less already know what to expect from Labyrinth of the Demon King; Exploration, methodical combat, puzzle solving, environmental storytelling, loot, Spells, etc. Combat is appropriately challenging, where every encounter poses a legitimate threat; don't become complacent just because you have good gear.

Conclusion

If you're even a mild fan of King Field's, Silent Hill or just simply looking for a Spooky Dungeon Crawler with satisfying and rewarding gameplay, then Labyrinth of the Demon King is an absolute must-play.
