Knightfall: A Daring Journey Review (EpicRaisin)
This review is going to be a long one, so strap in. If you are just reading this review to see if you should buy the game or not, the answer is no, don't buy it. I am going to put a huge emphasis on the fact that I am not recommending the game to new players, instead of not liking the game myself. This game is my favorite battle royale game out there... or at least it was. If you've played this game from the beginning, you know why. If you havent, then I'm going to have to tell a story.
I first started playing Landfall games when I found a little stick figure fighting game called Stick Fight: The Game. It was just about $5, so I bought it and gave it a shot. 40 hours of playtime later, even if I haven't played it in some time, it's still a blast every time I do play it. And it always has a fairly consistent player base, so I know I can hop in and play no matter what day it is. I'm surprised there is still a fair player base, for a game that was released in 2017 and is not updated anymore. Why then is Stick Fight still active, when Knightfall, not even a year old yet, and no longer updated just the same, is completely dead?
When this game first came out, I was a few days late, so I didn't get it for free. I still bought it, because it was quite a wacky idea I just had to see for myself. From the first game, I fell in love with it. It had so much to offer, that to explain all the things I loved about it would make this review too long, so I'll hold back on that. Point is, this instantly became my favorite battle royale game. To this day, I have not played another BR with as interesting a concept and as fun gameplay as this. Which makes seeing it die be that much sadder...
When this game released, it was explicitly stated that it would not be updated. So it turns out we got 4 more updates than we were supposed to get. This was a welcome surprise, and I think alot of people, including myself, thought that maybe they wouldn't abandon this game past day 1, maybe they will actually continue to expand this game that was supposed to be an April Fools joke. But then the updates slowed down, and the death sentence came.
June 14th, 2022. The devs release a statement saying with absolute certainty that the game will no longer be updated or maintained anymore. They've moved onto other game projects, Knightfall is done. Everybodies hopes of Landfall continuing the game are crushed. There is no definite point where Knightfall died, but this is the closest to one you can get. Past this announcement, the player numbers dropped, and nowadays, you'll basically never get to the required amount to start a game.
So why did this game die, when the aforementioned Stick Fight is still thriving? I don't know. There are definitely still people who would love to play this game, if there were enough people. Landfall's complete neglect for this game means that it won't get that slight boost it needs to get back off the ground and into the air. Maybe once it's in the air, it's player base can keep it up, maybe even take it higher. The only way to get it back in the air is if the community comes together, or if Landfall does something about it. And I really hope they do do something, because I would love to play my favorite battle royale again.
If any of the devs end up reading this, here is my suggestion: update the game. Make some more updates, get people playing again. Or heck, if you really want to keep with that goodbye message, at least tell your large community to play the game again. If enough people start playing it again, you won't need to update it anymore. Just like Stick Fight, the player base could maintain itself. You could even turn off IL2CPP, allow the community to make mods, or even open source it, allow the community to make updates.
Just please don't let this game stay dead. Please do not completely ignore this game in favor of other games. Please let us play the game again.
To conclude, I cannot, in this game's current state, recommend it, as much as it pains me to give it that red thumbs down. My greatest hope for this game, is that Landfall listens, and I can change this review to Recommended. Because that's what a game as unique as this should deserve.
