Kingdoms Reborn Review (txcowboy36)
This is like any other city builder. Manage your resources carefully, build your city, make everyone happy. Sounds easy doesn't it? It can all go wrong real quick if you aren't paying attention. The dominoes start falling, with little heads up and when they do, it goes fast before your citizens are dying so fast there's no saving your civilization.
While I'm a big fan of the game, it definitely has some draw backs. The game is much more in-depth than the Civilization series/franchise. Think Age of Empires meets Civilization. The biggest drawbacks for me is the tutorials and instructions to help you along while learning the game. It isn't very intuitive at all. Starting off, they do give you some help, but it isn't much. I think the developers are relying on the gamer already being familiar with the genre. It does help, but honestly, there are enough differences that a bit more explanation or help files would be better. Especially if your new to the genre and haven't played the other franchises before. The little help you get will get you through building your first houses, farm and that's about it. Once I built the first house, they said you need to feed your people and then I didn't see any tutorial information after that. There are little "challenges" or tasks you are given that does kinda push you forward, but even that is pretty lite. In the beginning, for my first try of the game, I had to build a bunch of houses before I had any means to feed anyone. Then the next task was to build this little fishing shack. Okay, I'm getting some food now, but then I'm already out of materials to build anything else. It took me a little while to finally figure out how to build a forest station. Then a while longer on what I needed to do to build a stone tools shack. They didn't say that you could just harvest trees and pick fruit without having a supporting building. The fruit isn't clear, but apparently it's oranges since that's what it looks like on some trees. After that, it gets pretty simple. But you are always so inundated with food, or its starvation levels. I'm sure there's a happy medium spot, but I was never able to find it. The same with just about every other industry material. Always too much and not enough storage space, or your barely limping by. The moment a material is in short supply, the whole chain starts falling apart. Run out of tools, then everyone stops working and then starves. And it isn't like they give you time to try and recover either. Once the first person starves (with no notice), then everyone dies or leaves all in minutes. Turn your attention to trying to fulfill luxury item needs believing your food chain is going strong and you've got tons of surplus, then suddenly it's gone and everyones dying faster than you can blink.
Maybe that's the challenge of the game. Either way, I do enjoy the game and got lost with the time. Before I knew it, I'd spent over 8 hours playing it. All night. Would I recommend this game? I would. But I would stress, it's a game in development. That there are some big flaws. If you can't live with them, then the game isn't for you. If resource management and logistics aren't your cup of tea, then don't buy it. But if you enjoy Civ and strategy games like Age of Empires, then try the game. It might surprise you.
