Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning - Fatesworn Review (Claymór)
(I have been playing this on an alt since my saves have been corrupted, THQ plz fix ty).
Honestly, even though I haven't finished it yet, Fatesworn is kind of a shame. KoA has a great atmosphere and art style to it that sorta gets lost in translation with Fatesworn.
While KoA quest design is nothing to write home about, Fatesworn quests are absurdly boring, and the Chaos theme of the expansion gets bogged down by repetitive portal closing and crappy Chaos enemies. As a pure Might player it's simple and braindead; as a Sorcery based character, I can't imagine the pain of dealing with them since the whole point of Sorcery is using abilities to their fullest - meanwhile these reskinned mobs tank everything unless you can get them to drop their "shields".
Combat becomes a slog and the amount enemies in a mob has seemed to be tripled; It was once rare to fight 5 at a time, now it's uncommon to be LESS than 5 at a time - all shielded enemies, by the way.
The environment art design is honestly great, easily the best part, though it lacks a certain something from the original game. Unfortunately, level design and layouts are frustrating, with way too long walks in between objectives creating too much down time and not enough things to do.
By far my biggest grievance is with a certain NPC you met some hours into the expansion. All I'll say is that they come across as super preachy and annoying.
"Kill, loot, repeat. Don't you want to break free from the yolk of being used?" they ask me in a superior tone reminiscent of my disappointed maths teacher.
"No," I want to say in reply, "I am fulfilling my power fantasy of being a mighty hero, ripping the literal fate and destiny from any ugly, evil, sumbitch who looks at me the wrong way - The only thing I want to break free from is this tedious, god's forsaken quest line and move on to something else."
Regrettably, all I could say is "Let's just get on with it," which, in a sense, was pretty apt.
Play the base game and first 2 dlcs and enjoy them. Play this only if you REALLY want to.
