Kingdom Two Crowns: Call of Olympus Review (FunkyBacon)
Finished DLC in single run on medium difficulty in coop mode(both played by me).
The initial island, the 4 small islands, and the 4 medium islands were great experiences. Had I gone with the Medium Island that forces a near perma-Winter first instead of last however, my opinion would surely have been different. Thanks DLC guide for warning me.
I liked the mounts, I liked the new powers, I liked the addition of the attack boat and having your small personal army to move about. I liked the art, and just the general experience amongst those 9 islands. Aside from my coop;s mount's abilities not working everytime I started until they switched mount once, I experienced no bugs during those islands.
However, the reason for this negative review has everything to do with the final island and the end-game boss.
It baffles me that anyone thinks that was a fun experience. You hit the weak spot, you hit the head, and it disappears for like 60 seconds, and then it comes back depending on your characters position, which could very well be right on your wall. And now everyone abandons it and runs back to your previous wall. Congratulations, you now no longer have access to the attack command cause that is beyond the snake.
Issue an attack and the soldiers just get stuck never getting in range of the enemy portals nor snake. Leaving you with a few hoplites and slingers to take down portals and the snake time and time again. Cause by the time you almost destroy a portal, the snake comes back and you have to retreat to go through the whole weak point > head headache again.
There is no way to permanently kill the snake, not even when you reach the end of the island, despite having liked the DLC till that island, this left me completely unsatisfied when I went to face the final boss.
And believe it or not, it got WORSE.
Entering the final boss island, you spawn into a tiny map. And suddenly get rocks thrown at you every 5 seconds that release 5+ greed the moment they touch the ground, also damaging you and your builders in the process so they drop their tools or even lose their citizen status. The greed steal your builders's tools and coins you drop and run off with them.
There is also no explanation of what you need to do at all.
Thankfully I was in coop and quickly noticed that I needed to build 4 statues, and came equipped with a combination of mounts and weapons that deal damage instead of just CC or give movement speed buffs so I could kill the greed, allowing me to steal back the tools and coins. 4 statues build and woop, game is cleared.
No explanation, no text, no story, just credits.
This was the least satisfying and most frustrating ending in a game(DLC or otherwise) that I can remember ever playing. The final boss and the boss fight basically used 0 of the mechanics encountered until that point, there seemed to be 0 connection to the game or its story, and it didn't even make me feel like I accomplished something, or give me the satisfaction of having the feeling of having killed the final boss myself or killing the semi-final boss snake in the island before it.
If I wasn't in coop I probably would have lost as there was way too much stuff going on at once and it just became a battle against chaos from above and on the ground until it eventually stopped when my builders did their thing. With just a single weapon and mount it would have been much more difficult if not near impossible to kill the greed.
I give it an 8/10 for the first 9 islands,
I give it a 1/10 for the final island and final boss fight.
