Kingdom Come: Deliverance Review (.MISTY)
=======================================================================
What a journey this is! It took 300+ hours and 2 playthroughs just to fully experience the main story and all the quests, map out all the forested lands, raise all stats to the max, read all the lorebooks and finally acquire all the achievements, and it was time well spent. In my opinion, this is the best medieval game of all time! (until the next one takes over)
KCD is an epic adventure-RPG medieval game, based loosely on old European history. There's no monsters, no signs, no magic and no overpowered heroes. However, there's political intrigue, fighting, romance, sorrow, betrayal, idiots etc. One of the reasons I love the game is because it's realistic and relatable.
You play as Henry, a young lowborn son of a blacksmith in a town called Skalitz, in Bohemia. Life in this town is slow and mundane, so Henry aims to one day leave the town and explore the world. Instead, unbeknownst to him, the world came knocking on Skalitz door one fateful day. Sigismund, a leader from another country, decided to attack Skalitz. Henry lost his parents, his home and almost his life.
He never give up. With the support of his own lord, Radzig Kobyla, other neighbouring lords, friends and strangers, Henry vows to find the persons who orchestrated the Skalitz attack and those who killed his parents. Being a lowborn, Henry is illiterate at first but he can learn to improve his reading. Being a clumsy fighter, he can learn to become a better swordsman etc. He also has a faithful dog called Mutt which he can command to do some doggy tricks. When trained well, Mutt will be a very helpful companion. It's all relatable.
Like all role-playing games, you serve as an errand boy to almost everyone you meet in the game. This is fine for me, because the story is excellent, the script is flawless and the characters' development are well-detailed.
I also love the melee combat system, the potion-making system, the lockpicking mechanism and the game of farkle. All unique and very interesting, especially the latter. Horse-riding is much better than in the Witcher. Occasionally, you will encounter some dull moments and some grindings are involved if you are going for maximum stats and all achievements. I only encountered very minor glitches like invisible NPCs in front of you.
All the DLCs are highly recommended and worth it. Mutt is from 'A Woman's Lot' DLC. No micro-transactions. There are also a few mods that you can try.
If you like RPGs and haven't bought or played the game yet, please give it a try. Experience the adventures of Henry of Skalitz and friends. It's a great game, though I must admit, experiences in your game may vary greatly as well.
I will be very much looking forward to KCD 2, from its small development team called Warhorse Studios from Prague, Czech.
