Kingdom Come: Deliverance Review (Baguette Man)
So for a long time I held off purchasing KCD because I simply didn't know what the game was or what made it interesting. I wish I had purchased it earlier though because it stands as the best rpg I have ever played. So I'll start with some pros/cons and if you don't understand what makes the game special you can scroll below.
Pros:
-Very Unique Systems (not just combat, but potion brewing, gambling, hunting, repairing, ext)
-Very Realistic in Both How it Plays and its World
-Unique Setting
-Good story (believable enough to be real, but epic enough to be interesting)
-Interesting Characters
-Constant Sense of Growth
~100 Hours of Gameplay
-Immersive
-Skill System Similar to Elder Scrolls
- Great Saving System
-Choices affect the world
Cons
-Extremely Difficult Early On
-Combat System Clunky with Multiple Opponents
-Ends on Cliffhanger
-Mediocre DLC
So to give a brief synopsis you play Henry a black smith's son in the Holy Roman Empire the country is on the verge of civil war and as a consequence your village is burned and you must go on a quest to avenge your family and reclaim your father's sword. The game is a very realistic depiction of medieval times and is very realistic in how it plays. The sword play is very in depth and requires a good deal of skill, but makes every fight interesting. What sets KCD apart from its competition is the uniqueness of every single system. For instance brewing potions is not a matter of getting ingrediants and pressing a brew button. No, instead you have to actually get a recipe and go through the process of making the potion in the correct order and time to produce your product. The gambling mini game isn't raw luck, but also skill and the ability to use weighted dice, which was super enjoyable. Overall every part of the game felt both realistic, immersive, and enjoyable. I will warn because the game is so realistic it comes off as kind of life simmy (you need to get food, keep yourself clean, ext.) so if you don't like those mechanics it may not be for you. Also it is extremely difficult early on you are poor with no skills and almost no save potions (you can still save at beds and the beginning of missions). This is exacerbated by the fact the game has you do more difficult tasks as a tutorial like hunting rabbits to learn to use a bow (which are the hardest animal to hunt including people) and fight cumans who are a decent bit better than your basic bandit. However, if you can get through that initial hurdle the games difficulty drops to a manageable level where everything still has challenge, but not spine shatteringly so. I will also throw out there the DLC are okay-ish. None were bad, but they are very compartmentalized and didn't add a lot. Also their rewards vary from useless garbage to the best items in the game which render all other equipment pointless and there's no real in between. In the end if you love historical dramas and are tired of bland flavorless rpgs where you walk up to enemies and press the one key to hit them slightly harder then KCD is for you.
