King's Bounty II Review (FullMetal)

A short and a long review from a fan, not a fanboy.

Disclaimer:
I own and played all the older games, you can check my profile

Short review:
Pay no attention to the review score, BUY IT, it is unique enough to at least you give it a try, if you like it just a little, you have to try the older games, they are all great/good (except for The dark side). The strategy part alone is going to be a lot of fun.

Long and boring review:
Yeah, this is not the original game, I get it, but still feels like a KB game. Let me dive deeper.
The combat is great, amazing turn base strategic RPG, arenas are unique, there are 4 "factions", I recommend using 2 at max per playthrough, the graphics are simple but good and you don't play this game for story... so the game is not garbage! As a matter of fact, I would say this is a A maybe AA game with a small budget very well used.
It's only 40 hours long, short for a KB game, and the game ends abruptly, hope the devs release some DLC since there is plenty to dig here.
The biggest complaint you will read in the negative review herer are: THIS IS NOT THE OLD KB therefore - > TRRASH. Well, it is indeed NOT KB 1, it is a new game, treat like it and give it a chance, it feels like a game which drew inspiration from it and that is OK to me. However, there are some really issues I should address here.
Difficult spike: by the mid game, you wil face an extremely powerful mandatory enemy, which might make players give up, since there's a limited amount of XP to farm and the resources are scarce, in normal it was hard as hell and on Hard was nearly impossible.
Classes: No matter the class you pick in the begining, you can access all skills and spells. The Devs should have make them more unique, giving access to exclusive/extra talents according to the class, would help the replay value.
Mana: This one is HUGE. Mana is a currency! A resource like gold, super weird decision by the Devs, as someone who always play as Mage/Paladin, that was a disappointment to be honest. But I should make it clear, it is totally possible to beat the game with mana to spare (I did it on hard mode with the sorceress, you just have to pick a few spells and commit to them. By the way, Blade of death is broken, made the fights trivial by the end of the game casting twice per turn).
Stats: there are only 3, and 2 are for casters, so if you don't play as a mage, just soak everything in Warfare. We should get at least another one, one for leadership, every X points increase the max number of units to 33% at max, which brings me to the next topic.
Leadership: THERE IS A MAX NUMBER OF UNIT. Like? Why? Really? units of tier 1 and 2 are useless by the end of the game, and this happens due the cap number of every unit, you can have 2000 leadership or 5000, you still can only recruit 10 soldiers... That being said, everyone will end the game with the same tier 4/5 units per faction.
Map: only 2 and one is the tutorial... come on... I was expecting at least one for each classic KB faction, elves and demons at least. On the other hand the map is blooming with quests, so evey inch is being used. However... I have to say this: loot is only gold and items for selling (more gold) there are too few equipments among them.
All in all, there is plenty of room to improvement, this is not a 10/10 game, even so the game is solid, a mandatory buy to SRPG fans, I wish there were more fights and units, maybe respawn the enemies after the mid game story fight or bring back the items with levels, optional ways to add more content, since the battleground are beautiful and well made, sadly, many of them arre only used once...
To the devs, bring me the DLC, I am craving for more KB, if you need to go back to the old games engine I don't care, we play this for the combat/strategy and huge content. Congratulations for the good game.
