Just Cause 4: Dare Devils of Destruction Review (Jonny Black)

This DLC is a ton of fun. It is Just Cause meets Mad Max, plain and simple.
The main focus is on 4 different "racing" categories using modified vehicles with different weapons and boosters welded onto them. There are 3 factions within the larger car gang, each with their own style of racing, and a 4th style that acts as an intro and the finale to the DLC.
The three race styles are as follows:
Standard race: This one focusses on the timer more than the other ones. You need to make it to the end within the time limit while also destorying enough equipment or other racers to get the best ranking. My only complaint with this one is that there are not extra points awarded for faster times, which would do a better job of seperating this type from the others.
Destruction arena: This one sets you up in an arena full of objects for you to destroy. This one is less about speed and more about how efficiently you can path around the area blowing stuff up. This one is my favorite because it plays on teh strong suit of most of the vehicles and the game engine.
Survival race: This one is all about not dying while doing the same thing as the other two. It now punished you for your car blowing up, and they actively have weapons, explosives, and even other cars going out of their way to kill you. It uses the same style as the other two, with levels both devoted to a linear race and an open arena, and honestly it just feels like a way to add slightly more difficult levels to the other two styles. This one is the hardest on your processor because of the sheer quantity of explosions and physics objects, and has been my only CTD in a while.
The intro and finale syles are just a larger form of the arena mixed with the survival one. They give you a huge map full of time extenders and destroyable objects that you must then race around, destroying as much as possible without letting them destroy you. These make you use everything you learned from the other three to be successful: staying fast, keeping up combos and timer extensions, and avoiding the many hazards.

All of the styles have the same two objectives: blow up enough stuff to achieve a higher rank, and find the hidden tiger in the level. I feel like the ranking system is out of place in everything but the destruction levels, while i feel like the other two should have different ways to rank the player. The tigers are a nice little push to go and explore the levels after finishing them the first time, as they are often on alternate paths or hidden behind objects.
I like they way the DLC rewards you with vehicles, as it doesn't just feel like "oh here, have this thing". Each race has its own vehicle that you get for completing it, but the higher rank you complete the level, the more upgrades said vehicle get. This really insentivises going for the higher ranks so that your cars become even more destructive and fun to drive.
The music for the DLC is great, adding many high-intensity tracks to listen to as you race your way to the top.

Overall, this DLC can be finished in several hours and completed in several more. It may be a short ride, but its one that adds alot to the base game without becoming busy work. Its definately worth the price for all the fun I had with the races, and the cars add some great variety to Rico's arsenal.
