Idun: Frontline Survival Review (Shadowwolf2139)
The game is entertaining enough and decently fun but there are things about it that are really grating. I'm going to complain about all those things here but know that I generally do enjoy the game. I have played it for almost 10 hours now, and have had to deal with these issues for a long time.
Like others reviews have pointed out, the voice acting is awful. Just because AI produces "good enough" results does not mean that it is going to be ideal in a game where you have to listen to the characters repeat the same soulless lines over and over again. If it was just the story missions, it would be tolerable.
There is no (that I can find) way to set the game to fast on a toggle. You can only speed up the game by holding spacebar. There are some missions (like the survive 15 minutes one) where I have set up my position and I just have to wait. Which involves holding space bar for long periods of time. A speed toggle would be nice, or use the 1, 2, and 3 keys to set speed to slow, normal or fast.
Why don't sniper turrets target the biggest thing in range? what is the point of them if they are going to shoot at maggots or chuckbites when I'm being attacked by beetles, or spitters, or catapulters, or an acid boi? Why would I ever upgrade their range if they are just going to waste it on shooting the closest thing? At least the sniper hero shoots fast enough and pierces to make up for it but he should also shoot targets worthy of being sniped. Maybe a turret targeting setting.
Losing the Skygun for half the game really sucks. There is no way around this one. I got stuck on the story mission with the heroes in the lab and had to grind for upgrade materials without the skygun and I didn't enjoy it.
For much of my time, RNG wasn't too bad but the times you get RNG'ed really suck. Stuff like lightning strikes taking out half your turrets at once instantly or repeatedly getting common orbs that offer you single sniper turrets, +1 upgrade options or mining pulses (all your miners are dead) when your front lines are crumbling.
I wish it gave you an indication things were about to die instead of when they died. In a particular mission, losses are irreplaceable, so losing turrets or heroes because It decided to send in triple the chuckbites out of nowhere and you get no notification except when your things start dying sucks.
Seriously, an achievement to last 2 HOURS in a 15 minute survival mission!? That's just sadistic.
This seems like a lot of complaints but I do genuinely enjoy the game and despite all these things, I will continue playing.
Also, the demo showcases raid mode, which is not the main gamemode.
