Hypercharge: Unboxed Review (Lady Tay, Necronyancer)
Hypercharge: Unboxed is a really fantastic game. Hypercharge: Unboxed is pretty much what it says on the box, it's a wave based horde shooter where you are a toy and fighting other toys. The maps are diverse and varied, ranging from small to massive (in both width and height) and truly does make you feel like a toy. There are a number of different toys you can play with, with a number of different colors and heads for some pretty good customization and you can even change the color of your weapon! There is a lot of platforming, which is surprisingly fun (especially since I really don't like platforming at all) and gives you really cool vantage points to attack the enemy or just.. Admire the map design. You collect coins to fund your defense building or buying weaponry, find unlockables and collectables and fight the bad guys!
The enemies are also really diverse, and depending on the map, can really keep you on your toes as enemies with different movement and attacking styles can attack you and your allies at the same time. There are a ton of different kinds of weapons, ranging from the basic rifle to a sniper, a shotgun, grenade launcher.. And more! I don't wanna give them all away, it's a lot of fun to discover them for yourself! :P
I think my favorite thing about this game is that you can build defenses to help you fight against the waves, whether they are static walls to keep enemies away or traps to damage or destroy enemies or even several kinds of turrets to help take the heat off you.. It's more than just a simple shooter.
I love the art style, I love how colorful and fun it is and the voice acting is pretty good. The enemies even have some special lines or sounds if you pay attention, which is a really neat detail!
I give Hypercharge: Unboxed a 9/10. The game feels like a near perfect game, definitely capturing that childhood fun of playing with your toys and action figures. I've been looking for a game like this, a video game that recreated the creativity of me as a little girl and playing with my Legos and action figures, imagining fighting bad guys.
My only complaint is that, and this is a smidgeon of a spoiler, is that I feel that weapons and emplacements (especially turrets) are too expensive and we don't get enough coins per mission. I have to juggle and choose if I'd rather have a cool weapon or good turret placements, and I'm not fond of that. Perhaps make things a bit cheaper? Unless I'm missing something x3
All in all, buy Hypercharged: Unboxed if your on the fence. It was absolutely worth it at full price for me, even more so at a discount. :)
