Hypercharge: Unboxed Review (Joe Disco)
A fun co-op horde shooter. It does have PvP modes, but my friends and I have yet to play those. All of my experience is either single-player or co-op.
It's got a good campaign with varied level/enemy design. The core loop is you and three buddies hold off waves of enemy toys advancing to destroy your little battery-powered brains in jars around the map, while trying to find cash and loot along the way. Typically you have 3 OBJs you have to defend and a sizable map with plenty of secrets to help you stand up to the tyrannical toys attacking you.
Guns include things like lasers, miniguns, shotguns, grenade launchers, and probably more I don't remember. You can also buy attachments during the level to upgrade stats on your guns. Levels include things like bedrooms, bathrooms, backyards, kitchens, etc. and it makes for a good variety of different environments to fight in with notably more verticality than I expected when going in.
All of your progress contributes to your customization options for your character. Maybe my favorite part of the game is to engage with is making my little action figure and assembling an absurd name from unlocked keywords. My friends and I have tons of fun making silly characters between levels, diving in to unlock more options, and doing it all over again. It gives me a feeling of nostalgia similar to walking down the toy isle as a kid and looking at all the various things on the wall my parents would never get me. Action figures were always pretty cheap though, so I got to take one home with me now and again.
For 25$ I think you could do a lot worse. If you lack friends to play it with it might be worth considering a sale first. I think the game has a nice and friendly community though it is small. LFG will probably get you better results than matchmaking, but it requires actually interacting with people you don't know. Scary right?
Anyways, good game. I do give it the Steam thumbs up.
