Hunt the Night Review (Sad Cat)
Hunt the Night is a souls inspired 2D action RPG with some platforming and shooting elements. It is a relatively short game that can be beaten in around 10 hours but can be further extended if you are going for 100% or new game+. below are some short pros and cons for the game.
PROS:
- The controls are responsive and dodge timings are tight but intuitive.
- The shifting between melee and gun combat is pretty nice and the ammo system is not to punishing
- Aside from 1 boss mother , I find them to be fun, have good auditory and visual cues, and have amazing designs.
- The enemy scaling is pretty good, you can beat the game with the starting equipment on a first playthrough.
- I know people are pretty mixed on this, but I really liked the puzzles as it doesn't hand hold you and 1 of them was down right cryptic.
CONS:
- I find most of the mechanics underdeveloped, I never use grenades as they are too clunky and deal little to no damage; the crossbow is inferior to the pistol and shotgun; and poison and burn don't deal enough damage or proc enough to warrant a build dedicated to them.
- Exploration is a pain in the ass. You don't have map or a collectible checklist, and a good portion of the early game is a swamp that needed a special unlock to traverse through.
- Story is pretty mediocre; I wasn't really invested, and the lore is pretty much all over the place.
- Music is okay, I wasn't impressed nor disappointed.
- Some bounty bosses are buggy; I bum rushed 2 of them and they died getting stun-locked by sword slashes.
Overall, I find the game enjoyable, albeit unpolished for the most part. If you are looking for a short game to binge through, but still want a decent challenge, then I highly recommend playing this game.
