House Party Review (darth_nihilux)

A lot of games advertise replayability as a sort of add-on, its a bullet point in the list of reasons why you should play their game and why you'll get great value out of it.
House Party forces you to replay it, over and over and over again, it's a core function. There are so many quest lines and pursuing one to completion often excludes several others. Not only that, pursuing one quest line forces you to begin and/or finish at least one or two others. I've always heard the term "branching story" thrown around by game devs but House Party really brings it to life. Thankfully, starting a new game doesn't feel like much of a hassle. If anything, you feel like you have a bit of a head start with each successive playthrough!
The characters are all interesting, everyone has a unique personality. Nobody in this game feels flat. The comedy is great and reminds me a little of American Pie. Every time I start a new game I always end up on a wildly different path than I was on before.
The main criticism of this game is that you have to take very specific actions in order to achieve a desired outcome, and they don't exactly make it easy to know what. There's some truth to that, at times I found the game really frustrating because it was basically like playing an obscure puzzle game. Then I'd go do another playthrough and hear ambient dialogue telling you exactly what to do. The devs did a great job of hiding things in plain sight. In many ways, the game rewards awareness of your surroundings, which is interesting because it's that exact awareness that helped me truly appreciate the game. It's not that these quest lines require things that are "too specific" it's that the devs want you to be clever in your decision making and if you fail on the first try, they want you to try again! Being pig headed is NOT going to get you anywhere here.
I'd also say that some of the rewards are grander than others, and it seems to be the bigger the reward is the more specific you'll need to play, the more experienced you'll need to be with the game's functions and the characters' quests.
There's also sex. Straight sex, gay sex, lesbian sex, threesomes, exhibition. Do not just expect some random porn sim though, the whole point of the game is that you're supposed to work for it. It's not really why I played the game but several people enjoy it in that respect.
I really appreciate the little disclaimer at the beginning, it brings up an interesting point. Why is gratuitous violence commonly accepted and why do we allow just anyone to watch it on Twitch? Why is it cringe to play a game like this but not some glorified war crimes simulator?
Idk, this game is awesome. I wanted a complex social sim and I got that and so, so much more. It's a gem, it's worth it even at full price.
