ใ…คใ…คใ…คAmong many misfortunes that have befallen me over the c(o)urse of my life, one stands out as particularly unpleasant โ€“ having been born too late to associate the very first Hitman game (Codename 47) with my childhood. You see, human memory is a wonderful thing; its failings and shortcomings are also its greatest strength โ€“ being able to take an objectively ugly or at best mediocre thing and give it some sort of nostalgic charm, smoothing over the rough edges, thus making it appear much better and more attractive than it actually is. Since I never played Codename 47 when I was a kid and was therefore deprived of the privilege to wear the nostalgia-tinted glasses, I saw it for what it was โ€“ a clunky, buggy mess with very few redeeming qualities. And let me tell ya โ€“ playing Absolution after having cleared the first instalment of the franchise not that long before felt surreal. I still find it hard to believe just how astonishingly gorgeous this ugly duckling managed to become thanks to IO's creative genius.

ใ…คใ…คใ…คOne thing must be made clear: when I say gorgeous, I don't mean just the graphics, even though this game still looks really good. It's more about something that can be called presentation โ€“ when you launch Absolution for the first time and stare at the main menu for way too long because of how bloody cool the thing is; when you begin playing and can't get enough of those impeccably done cinematic cutscenes and superb voice acting; when the game's mechanics just feel so fluid and natural to play around with. The fact that Absolution is so capable of exciting you and keeping you interested for a long time goes hand-in-hand with its apparent focus on replayability โ€“ every mission has about a dozen unique objectives that you can complete if you so wish. This can turn a three-hour playing session into redoing the same assignment again and again and again... but it doesn't get old, not in the slightest. Instead of zooming through chapters like a stealthy maniac on a killing spree, you're invited to meticulously study the very fabric of each level and reveal its innermost secrets, which is incredibly rewarding and feels like not just playing a game, but truly mastering it. This is probably my favourite part about Absolution and the reason I liked it so much.
ใ…คใ…คใ…คThe gameplay loop will be very familiar to anyone who's ever played a Hitman title โ€“ but this time, creativity and unusual ways to dispatch your targets are encouraged. Looking for potential deadly interactions is made easier with a new feature called Instinct โ€“ hold a button to use 47's intuition and highlight objects of interest. Instinct can be depleted, but you may recover it by successfully performing certain actions like finding Evidence. Levels are often extremely expansive, containing so many features that some assignments feel like complete games on their own. Sadly, a lot is missing due to the fact that Contracts will never be available again; while you can still enjoy the main story, the absence of this gamemode does take away certain mechanics like upgrading your weapons. It's still possible to upgrade 47's stats like Weapon Handling and Throwing, but the increments are ridiculous sometimes; the one that made me laugh out loud in disbelief was 'Improves running speed by 2%'. Hooray!

ใ…คใ…คใ…คOne part of Hitman that was somehow a miss is the story โ€“ banal and trite, its core premise can be summed up as 'a powerful man tries to save a fragile girl who is insanely valuable' โ€“ a trope that is older than Jesus, worn off and battered so much that it looks weird in such an outstanding videogame. Actually, the plot is filled to the brim with tired clichรฉs of various kinds of cringe-inducing potential, but the voice actors did such a good job and the animations were so on point that despite feeling like I'm being made to swallow the same dish that thousands of people chewed on and spit out before, I enjoyed it immensely.

Apart from the eight inaccessible achievements, the rest of them are fairly easy to obtain. One achievement you may struggle with is Absolution, which requires you to complete the game as a professional. You may choose between three professional difficulties โ€“ Hard, Expert, Purist โ€“ and only Purist is actually challenging, as it removes your interface entirely. The rest is a cakewalk.
ใ…คใ…คใ…ค๐Ÿ“ŒOkay, I know this may seem like a stretch, but on the off chance that you enjoy videogames โ€“ even a little bit โ€“ you should give Absolution a go. You may not be getting a full package, but what there is now is easily worth the full price.

๐Ÿ“ My poor little laptop did its best and only struggled a little bit on big levels with a ton of NPCs and vegetation; stable 60 FPS most of the time with rare drops to about 50. Nothing that would make the game unplayable.
