คA proper checkpoint system? Check. An adequate control scheme that can be used by any regular human with only two hands? Say no more. Revamped AI that doesn't freak out at weapons that don't exist? You got it. User-friendly interface, the ability to look through keyholes and pick locks, even the first-person perspective for greater immersion, all those details both big and small โ Silent Assassin does virtually everything better than its predecessor, and supporting IO Interactive with your wallet really feels like getting a good deal. They released Codename 47 โ the game that was basically a first draft โ then listened to feedback and improved immensely in only two years, producing a title that not only fixed their previous mistakes, but went the extra mile and made the experience engrossing, memorable, entertaining. That much more bang for your buck.

คThe only thing they couldn't quite get right was the story. Silent Assassin has 21 missions โ more than in any other Hitman game โ and keeping two dozen chickens in the coop, making them into a cohesive whole requires a plot that is powerful enough in its narrative: logical, seamless, structured, able to lead the player, grip and excite them. Instead, the hapless farmer falls asleep and the chickens run away, thus becoming almost standalone experiences, since the narrative bonds that are supposed to hold them together are about as strong as a spider's web, its gossamer threads now flying at random, caught by the wind. I honestly couldn't care less about what was happening in Silent Assassin. Whenever I tried, a disappointed 'eh' would ultimately follow. This game does want to make you emotionally invested at times, but it's like a lanky 14-year-old attempting to benchpress 300 pounds โ the ambition is there, sure, but it's just not gonna happen.

คEven though this game lacks narrative strength, it still packs quite a punch gameplay-wise. All missions feel more fleshed out, more competent, ready to showcase new mechanics that allow many ways to complete each task. Not only are there 21 unique contracts, but the replayability factor has been increased tenfold compared to the original โ 47 now has a shed where he keeps all weapons he picks up during missions, and you can go out of your way if you so wish and gather them all: a remarkable collection of shootin' irons, adorning the walls of an innocent-looking wooden shack. Moreover, the rating system makes its appearance, and your performance will be judged according to several important criteria such as the number of shots fired, civilians killed, and alarms set off; based on your stealth and aggression, the final rating is drawn up โ from the lazy Mass Murderer to the eponymous and elusive Silent Assassin โ and you feel a typical completionist's itch that begs, that implores to be scratched, and the devil on your shoulder is whispering: 'Go ahead, do everything again, but this time... be efficient. Precise. Deadly. Invisible.'

คSpeaking of gameplay, this just in โ you can now save in Hitman! Therefore, experimentation and trying to think outside the box are not punished by the tedium of having to redo the entire assignment again, and if you're playing on Normal, you get seven saves per mission โ seven saves, ladies and gentlemen. It's like Christmas every time you accept a new contract โ seven big presents, smiling parents and holiday cheer.

คJust like in the first game, don't expect to find any real eye candy here, but an occasional look at a castle or whatever can still surprise you a bit: they could do that at the beginning of the century? Looks decent... for its time. Another surprise โ a great one โ will be the soundtrack, which toned down its rough electronic feel in favour of orchestras with epic choirs and grand culminations. Anything that Jesper Kyd does is genius by default, and my hand did not waver when I gave the soundtrack the maximum possible score. I guess this will become something of a tradition with this franchise.

คThe music blends in nicely with any environment you'll find yourself in, and oh, boy โ will you be going places; from Italy to Russia, Japan, Malaysia, India, and Afghanistan. Wherever you go, the most typical stereotypes will follow; in Russia, empty cities are full of barricades and there are soldiers with guns patrolling the streets, blasting first, asking questions second. In Afghanistan, almost everyone is a terrorist. And what is Japan without ninja warriors clad in black, perched on the rafters โ naturally โ backflipping to the floor and charging a gun-wielding assassin with a katana? Overall, the cultural portrayal has never been Hitman's strongest suit; it's endearing and innocent in its apparent ignorance, but it's never really offensive.

คLast but not least, bugs and glitches, the number of which has been greatly reduced, still pop up occasionally; no crashes to desktop or anything like that, but broken animations and T-poses will appear here and there, reminding you that no matter how polished this game is, it's not perfect โ technical limitations, 2002, the whole shebang.

ค๐So, with its inventive mechanics, expert game design, excellent soundtrack and insane replayability, Silent Assassin is a title that should not and cannot be ignored by fans of the genre. It beckons to you from the far end of the Steam supermarket aisle: 'You liked Absolution and these newer games โ play me too!' And you know, honestly โ you should just take the bait.
