HeistGeist Review (mondzi)
I'm usually not the biggest fan of card-based mechanics in games, but this game pleasantly surprised me. The pace of getting new cards is done thoughtfully, so it doesn't overwhelm you with ton of options and deck customization right from the start. Instead, you're using 6-7 cards at first and learning the combo mechanics. Every card has one bonus effect when played after specific card type (A, B, C types). It's easy to understand and gives you this organic "guide" to the overall flow of the combat. It gets more interesting the further you progress in the game, also thanks to enemy variety and their cards (abilities). They'll start to use more abilities with status effects and you have to counter them. The combat itself is also thoughtfully paced between other activities during missions (heists) - events with choices, dialogues (also with choice), and hacking. Hacking is it's own combat-like minigame, which somewhat reminds me of hacking in the newer Deus Ex games. It has been quite easy so far, but I expect it to be more challenging later. Overall, good stuff :)
Second big part of the game is it's story. I would even say, it's the primary focus of the game and it shows. The production quality is very high, characters have distinct personalities and quirks, voice over (Karel!), art style and aesthetics are top notch. Everything feels like it was handled with care and love. It has this light cyberpunk feel, not too depressing, but also not too cartoony. I haven't finished the story yet, but I'm looking forward to see more of it.
On the technical side, I've had a perfect experience and encountered zero bugs. That's not a given these days and it's a testament that developers really cared about it.
Oh, and the music...the tracks are real bangers and fit the cyberpunk theme perfectly. Even if you're not interested in the game, give the OST a listen if you like this genre.
