Hacknet Review (sophistry)
Probably the most fun you can legally have with directory commands. Still, Hacknet may or may not be for you, depending on what you're hoping to get out of it.
If you're in it for the narrative experience and the voyeuristic joy of poking around in other people's business and/or places that you don't belong, indulging the cinematically-improbable-but-evergreen-cool Hacker Man(tm) in your heart to the appropriately driving beat of smooth EDM, then you'll definitely enjoy what this game is -- regardless of your actual level of familiarity with all things tech. It's a game that intends to be accessible so it glosses over the hard stuff, handing you tools that amount to pegs you've got to put into the proper holes at the proper time, often under (mild) time pressure. They're basic, familiar video game mechanics, dressed up this time as Hacker Stuff, and I think it works because it takes a back seat to the story. The game doesn't take itself too seriously, but has poignant moments all the same.
If what you want instead is a game that's going to have you actually writing code or cracking difficult puzzles, this isn't what you're looking for. The guy who made it clearly has a background in tech, but this isn't a Zachtronics thing -- it's essentially a slick visual novel with some fun exploratory/investigative elements and some hidden surprises for diligent snoopers.
I was excited to see that other people have crafted their own bite-sized stories for Hacknet, and I'm looking forward to trying them out!
