Grim Fandango Remastered Review (gabyrippling)
Not having played this when it originally came out, I was excited to get my hands on it and finally play it. i love a good puzzle game, and IMO most of the original puzzles hold up. Unfortunately, I'm not certain how this qualifies as a remaster beyond just making it just-playable on a contemporary system. Some minor QOL improvements (even just making the point-and-click controls work properly, which often they do not) would have been nice - the janky controls and issues with items blending into the background (or puzzle solutions occurring in dialog, or just... not working without having Manny placed precisely in a specific spot) are frustrating. Also, given how buggy the game remains, and that LucasArts generally didn't have dead ends, I'm puzzled by the decision not to include an auto-save at least; the game crashed or froze up on me various times, forcing me to lose progress which thankfully was more annoying than game breaking. That said, despite the frustrations (in part I think because a lot of developers don't really know what to do with point-and-click games to make them better since they've been so marginalized - I've seen some of the same issues in very recent games), the story is enjoyable, the art is fun, the dialog is snappy, and most of the puzzles make sense, though there are some that are annoying (minor spoiler: I suppose metal detectors may work differently in the afterlife, but generally they don't detect gold). If you like this genre, then you'll probably like this, keeping in mind it runs like the D.O.D's cars before Glottis gets his hands on them.
