Green Hell Review (krolposejdon)
Okay, what is this game?
Surely, it's a gem, which needs polishing a bit. The game is great - you play as Jake Higgins, who is a doctor who tries to find a cure for his wife, while going adventures and exploring the jungle. That's all about story, because story - in my opinion - isn't good or bad, it's in between these.
Okay, so what made me to give positive review to this game? I'll explain: the game is kinda hard - but it's what it's when you're a man who is just thrown into the jungle, who tries to survive and to find his beloved wife. Game does it well. It has a steep learning curve, but when you understand the basics, the game is just pretty simple. You need to fill 3 macronutrients indicators, take care of your health and sanity. The game punishes or rewards you for every choice you make. Every plant/animal (as food) is unknown and gives other effects while eating. Some may lower your hunger, some may lower your sanity, and some will make you dead/vomit.
Okay, so I pointed (in short) eating and surviving above. Let's go to survival aspects - combat, building, crafting.
Combat
So as I stated above - the game is hard (everything tries to kill you, even your wrong choices can make yourself as enemy).
But there are other dangers you need to fight: tribals (not hard, but they always attack in groups so it may be hard, when your only weapon is spear); big cats (jaguars and pumas); caymans and piranhas; snakes, spiders and scorpions. Combat is pretty simple - every headshot ends in a kill. And if you hit (by hitting/throwing) any other part of the body - enemy will bleed out soon. So combat is pretty simple, you only need to maintain your stamina, block and hit.
Crafting
Crafting is pretty simple - it's intuitive - you want a spear? Okay, so you need to put 1 stone blade, 1 long stick and 1 rope. That's all, every item you make is saved in your notebook. All you need is to find new blueprints (found when exploring the jungle and finding new items/constructions) and you need to collect new materials (for example, to unlock bamboo things, besides those made of wood).
Building
Building might be a chore, depends on how big things you build. Almost every construction needs long sticks or logs (so you need to cut down many trees to make a big building for example). The way you build is great, you just put your plans, and fullfill them - step by step - with the items needed. The only bad things (besides the one said above) are that constructions don't stop rain animation inside the building and animals just "penetrate" them. And to add to the end, you need a lot of flat surface to build - the game is just lacking flat surfaces; you need to clear the surface from almost all plants and trees before you can build on it. I need to add that they forgot to add the option to just chop down the fallen logs (I mean the short ones, not "footbridges").
Performance and graphics
The game is made by small a studio, using Unity Engine, so optimization isn't good, but it's not that bad. But the graphics are stunning - seriously, everything looks just beautiful.
Overall rating: 7/10
As stated before, the game is great, but isn't perfect, the optimization could be better and there should be more mechanics and items (but the studio is still working on adding new content so it looks promising ).
Pros:
- graphics,
- mechanics,
- great survival,
- crafting system.
Meh:
- story,
- survival mode (I didn't know where to put it, but survival is just great, BUT if you played story first, then you'll wander around the same map, searching for the same items and blueprints (just in other places) and after achieving all your goals (for example building a big base), the game just feels kinda boring.
Cons:
- optimization,
- building,
- slow development,
- it's grindy a bit and monotonous.
DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE MOTION BLUR! YOU CAN TURN IT OFF IN GAME OPTIONS, IT'S NAMED AS HEAD BLOB OR SMTH LIKE THIS!
