Gravity Circuit Review (simSalabim)

It is as fun as the trailer makes it look. Kind of a mashup of the side scrolling Mega Man games (heavy emphasis on Mega Man Zero) and Bionic Commando (hookshot!). The comparison to MMZ is mainly due to the emphasis on close range combat, having a home base that you can screw around in outside of missions, and grading you on play style (how quickly you beat a level, how much damage you took, how many enemies you destroyed, etc). It feels like an original title that is an homage to these titles, rather than ripping them off.
You run around beating and hookshotting enemies. There are a good 20+ special moves that give you a ton of options: several fighting moves like an uppercut and a spinning kick, some mobility moves like a dashing punch and a downward beam that lets you hover, and others like a healing ability, a shield, and a counter. These use burst energy, which you mainly earn by destroying enemies.
You also have 3 passive ability slots that you can use to improve yourself in a variety of ways like upgrading your attacks in different ways, boosting your defenses in certain situations, applying a shield in certain circumstances. There are also a ton of these you can get, maybe 30)
I only have a couple of minor gripes. There are a couple of passive abilities that shouldn't take up one of your 3 slots because they are either useless 99% of the time, or are nearly required 99% of the time. The game gives you 3 loadouts to compensate for this, so you can swap pretty quickly, but this just equates to a design flaw that requires you to micromanage a tiny bit (though, again, very minor). The only other complaint is that the menus for selecting abilities are annoying once you get more than 5 or so options. You can only view a couple lines at a time as you're selecting your ability, and by mid-game you are scrolling up and down a list of 15 items that look pretty similar to each other. My preference would be a grid menu instead of a list.
Those gripes aside, I have to give props for something I rarely see in games. There are a lot of really nice control options. For example, you character slides just like in Mega Man: press down and A (or whatever button) simultaneously. Not only can you additionally bind slide to its own button (and there are a couple free buttons to choose from), you can also disable the Down + combo if you bind slide to a single button. Also, not only can you have the game display the number of available bursts (special moves) next to your character whenever you collect burst energy, you can choose short, long, or permanent duration. Little touches like these are really nice accessibility features that make the game more fun and easier to enjoy if you find them useful.
One last thing, no spoilers. This is one of those games where you upgrade your character quite a bit, and you can get to the point where you're basically a demigod. You're definitely not invincible, and it still presents a challenge (depending on your play style), but half(ish)way through the game the pace can really pick up. For example, most (all?) levels give you a maximum bonus for completing them in under 6 minutes. Before I unlocked much, I had a couple of levels that I took around 20 minutes to beat (I like to meander and FAFO). Once you get a few certain upgrades, that 6 minutes becomes very realistic.
The game also has a neat story and a fun sense of humor.
I highly recommend this at full price. If you can get it at a discount, you absolutely should not pass it up.
