Graveyard Keeper: Better Save Soul Review (Krenztor)
I hadn't played Graveyard Keeper in a couple years, so I decided to buy all the DLC and start a new playthrough.
This was my first time playing Better Save Soul. Took me A LONG TIME to figure out how in the heck the new mechanics worked. Like I'm done with my playthrough and I still don't know if I fully grasp how they work. Maybe I'm just a dunce but I wish more was explained. I see videos out there of people making 26 white skull corpses and I can say I didn't dive into that aspect of this DLC because it would take way more work than I'm willing to put into it! I know Graveyard Keeper is kind of a grind game at it's core, but there are parts of this DLC that exceed what I'm willing to grind.
All that said, I still really liked the new mechanics once I got used to them. Some of it still feels arbitrary to me but if I don't think about it too much it is still enjoyable.
I wish I didn't have more to say about the DLC than this, but unfortunately there is the story it adds. Wow. I mean, what in the heck was that story?? Only two new characters are added, the ghost Smiler and Euric. We're supposed to be helping Euric and I know that in real life you can't always help someone no matter how hard you try, but this is a video game for crying out loud. Won't go into spoilers, but it is just extremely confusing and unsatisfying what happens with him. I thought I had maybe done something wrong to cause his reaction, but then I looked up other players explaining that the same thing happened to them. This is just bad story telling.
To finish on a good note though, I must say that one of the most helpful things to happen with this DLC is that Euric does pay a full gold piece for completing one of his missions and that saved me A TON of grinding at that point where this is given out. I like that adding this DLC made that part of the game a lot easier to move through and allowed me to bypass a bunch of waiting.
Overall, I like the DLC. Just when you go into it, know that the story hits a jarring and confusing end. My best hope is that there will be one more expansion to Graveyard Keeper which actually expands on what in the heck is going on with Euric.
