Golden Idol Mysteries: The Spider of Lanka Review (pill)
For the $5 I paid, this was a pretty decent DLC. There are a few things that stand out about this DLC.
1. It's MUCH harder. The first mission is pretty straightforward. The second puzzle is probably the hardest puzzle this game has by far. The third one is pretty easy but suffers from the fact that most of it will just be trying to figure out what words go where, even if you understand completely what has happened at this point. This is fine, especially for people who've played the game before. I just think it's a little bit overkill in the second mission, and the third is a lot easier than it should have been.
2. The art style is very different. The animation is way more fluid and the art seems less detailed in parts. While I think this DLC looked and sounded GREAT, I'm not sure how to feel about the new animation style. It looks way too different and smooth for the older, choppier style that the base game had. I kind of wish they'd stick to the older style for consistency, but I suppose I'll entertain this new style. I'm happy that the artists behind the game are improving, after all, but the old style was a lot more... old school... I suppose.
3. The theming and the story implications aren't as grand. This was the worst part about the DLC to me. It doesn't really take fruition in the same way that the base game went. While the base game shows the progression of a simple expedition into the establishment of a new world order-style political party, this DLC just shows a conspiracy perpetuated by a trading company. The implications and ties into the main story are nice, yes, but I wanted something a little bit more grand and spectacular, especially in a world where magic is demonstrably real.
Instead, we get "this guy tricked this other guy into trusting him, revealing things to him which allowed them to get the information they needed and leave." As a story it works wonders, but I really honestly expected more. Here's to hoping that the developers have more in mind, because Golden Idol's worldbuilding is quite spectacular and interesting on its own.
I guess my only real complaint about this DLC is that I wanted more and that I wish they would make the puzzle solving a bit more involved than just filling out story elements, which was only really an issue in the third chapter. Either way, the DLC is good and reveals a bit about the main game as well as possibly more to come in the future.
As a final note to the developers: Please please PLEASE make more of these, and add more spectacle!! The reveal of the Golden Idol's powers over time made the game fascinating to watch, as well as the gruesome nature and mystery of some of the deaths in the game. Add supernatural elements and maybe even some beasts or something. That aspect of the game was the main hook it had for me, and though the mystery and conspiracy is nice, I really thought this DLC would harbor more. As it stands, the ending is very anticlimactic since it only really boils down to revealing the trading company's plan and one of their agents escaping. It feels very anticlimactic especially since the second puzzle was quite shocking and interesting to unravel. The last puzzle doesn't really feel like an ending to a story.
