Ghost Town Review (CasualCheetah)

Fireproof Games have really outdone themselves! Ghost Town is another outstanding showcase of this developer’s keen skills with crafting atmosphere and designing satisfying contraptions, but this time, they’ve gone all out on the story and sets as well. Every space you walk through is brimming with details. The mocap performances look amazing in VR and are a big upgrade from A Dark Matter’s FMV bits. VR once again grants even the simplest of puzzles tactile charm. Pulling levers, manipulating objects, twisting keys, and so forth all feel great, and it all makes the right noises too. As far as it being a spooky game goes, the experience never oversteps its boundaries, meaning there aren’t any scares, just a disquieting, persistent, and alluring sense of mystery in ominously-lit locations.
It should be noted that the story takes center stage here, and the complexity and length of puzzles has been drawn back to fit a more complementary role. That balance seems to have worked well for the pacing since I found myself enjoying the game enough to finish it in a single sitting. Ghost Town was a real treat. The only thing I’d change about it is probably the name, as it feels a tad generic and I’m not sure how much of a role “the town” plays in it.
