Gears 5 Review (edricluffie)
IT'S EVOLVING... BUT BACKWARDS
I like Gears for it's cinematic feel in an FPS, jumping from cover to cover and having a good ol' shooty shooty bang bang. This Gears still have all that, plus some additional interesting mechanic in terms of robot assistance. Although the robot assistance felt kinda secondary, since you tend to forget about it's abilities in the heat of fire, and the abilities charges too long for it to matter much at all.
That said, the other features added in to Gears are terrible. Whoever decided to add exploration section with upgrades hidden in corners should be fired. This is not Dark Souls, the exploration is tedious, boring, monotonous and pointless. Stupid "signal matching" games, and absolutely pointless skiing section just proves how utterly out of touch the devs are.
If you want to add any exploration, at least make it like a "hunt". Nobody goes to Gears for "open world" elements. I only bought it because Gears 2 & 3 isn't on pc and i want to see where the story goes. The story is....alright, extremely predictable cliche tropes that you have seen a thousand times. Your team has done some bad stuffs in the past, and somehow that bad stuffs has connection to you *rolls eyes*. Anyway, thankfully I bought this in a sale, so I don't feel too bad, but if this is the direction Gears are going in the future with all the open world stuffs, then the only way they are going is downwards.
