Forza Motorsport Review (Arnold Braunschweiger)

Overall, FM8 is a fun game, though it’s nowhere near as advanced or complex as it claims to be in the store page descriptions. To me, it sits somewhere between Gran Turismo and GRID in terms of keeping balance between accessibility and realism, making it a decent option if you're looking for a more casual motorsport experience. This pretty much falls in line with the rest of the series (and I’ve played all of them, except FM1), but there are a couple of caveats.
First, the variety of tracks and cars feels much more limited compared to other motorsport games, and even compared to Forza 7. For the vast majority of events, you’ll sit behind the wheel of various GT or touring cars, most of which are limited to race versions with very few factory models, and there are only minor deviations from this theme, such as prototype hypercars or retro formula one cars. The primary career is pretty narrow in scope, as it's basically all just touring cars from various decades. Once you finish it, the only other curated career mode comes in the form of special events that are on a timed rotation which changes every few weeks, similar to a live service game. These events provide a bit more variety, but it sucks that you're basically being encouraged to grind through a long series of races just because of some artificial FOMO that was built into this mode, rather than offering these extra events as premium add-ons. At least they didn't include any battle passes, though never say never...
As for graphics and bugs, the game has definitely improved since last year. They recently fixed the annoying bug where the game would "fall asleep" during menu loading screens and only wake up if I alt-tabbed out and back in, so that's a plus. Other than that, I haven’t encountered any major issues, and performance has been mostly solid throughout my playtime. The graphics are generally good, with the fidelity and car geometry being objectively better when compared with the previous game. However, the art direction feels less vibrant with much more "muted" colors, and the game overall looks blurrier which is pretty disappointing. If you've seen the DF videos where they showed how much better it can look with enhanced ray tracing that can be forced through config tweaks, then you'll know what I'm talking about. Although the performance hit is so significant that it hardly feels worth the effort. Visually, the game doesn’t "pop" out of the screen like FM7 did, and I think it could benefit from some added flair to make it stand out. Since it’s not a hardcore simulator, it definitely wouldn't be out of place to stylize it at least a little bit.
Despite these gripes, I’d still recommend picking it up. I’ve had a good time in my 100+ hours of playing it, and I’m still not bored. Just be aware of what you’re getting into, because if you're expecting the most advanced and comprehensive motorsport simulator, the you probably should look for a something else.
