Fort Solis Review (TanktheTortoise)
WARNING THIS CONTAINS SPOILERS
Okay, still here? Cool, I'll break this down into 3 sections, Optimization, Gameplay, and Story.
Optimization
Quite frankly there is none. The game crashes 35% of the time when hitting continue, but continues to run in the background forcing you to kill it via steam or task manager. Then the resolution is hard locked at 1366x1280 for some reason on every mode except windowed (this is not my display resolution in case you are wondering). Then it has FSR2 which basically overrides all your display settings anyway, I found to get the game to play but actually be able to see what I was looking at required balanced. However, even on the lowest settings you will still experience freezes and high CPU utilization. Also experienced a lot of pop in and textures just vanishing on the higher settings. At first I attributed this to perhaps something in the story but it was clear that was not a priority as mentioned below.
Gameplay
Do you like quicktime events? Cause that is the only gameplay in the game. There were several moments that I thought I was going to get a puzzle and nope nada, closest thing is figuring out security codes of which there are 2 in the game. One is so easy a baby could do it and the other as far as I know of no one has figured out yet without brute forcing it. The thing about the qte's that is even more annoying is they don't really change much. This breaks down into 2 types, A) progression stops until you solve the QTE the correct way, or B) you get a slightly different scene if you succeed vs fail but same situation overall.
Story
Okay this is why you are here after all right? Well don't waste your time. No questions are answered. The majority of the game involves the 2 protagonists joking about a zombie series they just watched, yet upon finding a dead body they ignore their instincts to GTFO. This is even commented on in the game "You know it seems like you are trying to oneup the stupid protagonists in every horror film when they should clearly leave" < that's a direct quote from the game.
If the game was trying to be tongue in cheek or had some clever twist it would be one thing, but there's no payoff. They say something about the soil, but never point out what the problem with the soil was. Why did Wyatt go from a caring father and doctor who wanted the program shutdown to brutally murdering everyone? What was the deal with the soil that caused people to get aggressive (according to Wyatt)? If Wyatt is supposedly still sane and is trying to contain the situation by killing everyone who comes in contact with it why does he cackle like a madman when Jessica runs away? Why did he just capture Jack, but immediately went to trying to kill Jessica? How is he teleporting all around the base?
None of the above questions will be answered and you will be left wondering. Oh and in case you were wondering about the endings both are garbage. It literally comes down to the second to last set of QTE's where you are running away. If you mess up too many times while running, he catches you and in a fight you both die. Otherwise he doesn't catch up until the hanger and you survive due to the cavalry finally arriving. But Jessica dies due to getting cut by the same axe IN THE SAME SPOT that Wyatt had been cut by up to 5 times if you had completed the QTEs correctly, apparently leaving her too weak to do anything but an offscreen sacrifice that accomplishes nothing because it doesn't slow Wyatt down.
All in all it has the same story plot beats of a B horror film, killer goes mad, kills everybody and stalks the rest and somehow can't be put down like a human being. No payoff, no epilogue or satisfying conclusion. Just dull sense of "why didn't he just leave after finding the dead body."
TL;DR
Do not buy if you have any interest in story or gameplay. Only buy if you are wanting to support an indie company.
