For the King II Review (Albeoris)
If judged as a standalone game, For the King 2 might be decent. However, compared to its predecessor, it’s a significant step backward. Playing this sequel feels unpleasant due to polished mechanics and a clean interface from the first game being replaced with new raw systems.
The switch from voxel graphics to 3D models doesn’t work in its favor — the visuals feel bland and uninspired. Combat is chaotic and monotonous. Most weapons offer a basic attack and a secondary one with ineffective effects. Ineffective because no matter what debuff you inflict, enemies still retaliate with physical attacks. It’s often better to spam basic attacks for the highest hit chance, though even this gets frustrating, as many enemies have absurd dodge stats. Perfect attacks miss frequently because of this. Most enemies are immune to status effects, too.
In the first game, the balance was flawless — every item felt valuable. Here, you’re overwhelmed with useless junk, which is only good for selling, yet you hardly need money. The wild RNG, designed to force focus usage, discourages engaging with map events, as 4 out of 5 times, you’ll lose. Even a rare success doesn’t justify the losses.
The new movement system during combat is pointless, as most enemies have either AoE or heavy single-target attacks. AoE hits everyone, and heavy attacks can one-shot your tanks. Ironically, a party of four musicians at the backline performs better than a tank-dps/support setup.
Other issues include painfully slow scene transitions before every battle, an inconvenient and confusing interface, and a complete lack of emotional connection to the characters. Quests feel unbalanced, and there are countless small annoyances, such as the end-turn button being reassigned from Space to DEL, forcing heavy mouse reliance. Constant stuttering, like when changing a hero’s class, makes the game feel like an unfinished alpha version but certainly not a completed product.
And again, this comparison is to the near-perfect original game. I'm disappointed.
